has anyone imported an EU car before? What needs to be done to make it road legal in the UK?

You'll need to get the lights changed for RHD units, the speedo changed or converted to mph, and to ensure that all the light lenses are the correct BS standard colour.

Assuming it's a current or recent production model, this shouldn't be an issue. However, for cars not generally sold here, or for kits, or very old vehicles, you may need SVA (Single Vehicle Approval), which is like a very stringent MOT (although you only take it once). Vehicle with Type Approval bypass this.

Read this from Customs. If it's not a new car (as defined by being more than 6 months old AND having travelled under it's own power for more than 6,000km), then there's no VAT to pay (read section 10), otherwise there is.

Read this from DVLA.

Hope this helps

thanks PJ

I suppose if the car was imported by the previous owner and he has a V5 logbook for the car it would be properly done (going by the DVLA website).

In theory, yes, but get it MOT'd first, and that will ensure all the legal bits are sorted.

Either a C30 CDI AMG , E400 CDI or E500

er...I wish...a friend was looking at a couple of LHD Beemers and asked me the question. Said I'd ask.

Still on the lookout for a nice W123 or W124 CE coupe :D

From memory it is 5 pot 3 litre, turbo, water to air chargecooler. 0-60 approx 6.5s.
Not blisteringly powerful but goes Ok.
