List your pet hates of motorists

So you see it. You know it's ahead and you "zip filter". But her he comes. Steaming up the outside and forcing in on the brakes. Acceptable?

Use the quote button BM...don't know which post you're referring to.

If you drive a BMW then there is no other way.

I might go and buy a 3series Msport. They fit into the smallest of gaps in these situations. :D:D

Yup. My driving is more positive as no one let's you out/in. Not a major problem to me!

The key word here is FILTER that means to get in the correct lane when there is space to do so with minimum interference to other drivers. Charging to the front then forcing your way into the correct lane may put you ahead of others, but it delays others who were more thoughtful.

Like joining a motorway, you look for a suitable gap and adjust your speed to filter onto the motorway with minimum interference.

It is tricky to know hawo to do it. I think the intention is with Highway Code rule 134 that both lanes are used up to the obstruction, then merge in turn at slow speed

New Highway Code could help cut congestion :: Advanced Driving UK

Multi-lane carriageways (133-143) : Directgov - Travel and transport

So why do we waste all this money on warning signs. Why not just have one sign 20 yards in front of the cones that states in flashing letters >> CONES!! BARGE IN NOW

Bruce, calm down, it's against every driver's instincts to ignore an empty lane...if everyone accepts that then the zipper merge will work, and no one will get upset. The signs are there to make everyone aware and to slow the traffic down to make the merging safe.

I will go up the empty lane as far as I can and then merge...there's always one obliging, level headed, non confrontational, considerate, knowledgeable driver to aid this perfectly acceptable and correct move.

Brake dabbers on the motorway. The kind of people who, in a queue of fast moving traffic can't adjust their speed to maintain a safe distance from the car in front without repetitive recourse to the middle pedal.

All of the above + smokers!!
I hate with a passion these inconsiderate tools who a) smoke with children in the car b) smoke and try to flick ash through a letter box sized gap in the window c) smoke and then chuck their butts out the window. I cannot for the life of me understand why smoking and driving is not banned.

...fixed that for you...

:)

Why is it my old coupe unaccountably seems to gather speed in this scenario, thereby closing any gap between me and the car in front.

I also hear a disembodied voice in my head saying: "he is most welcome to merge in - but it will be behind me..."

Oh just thought of another pet hate.

People driving around in a car that is obviously off a cylinder putputput. Oblivious!

230k:D:D

Has anyone mentioned people that slow down to 40mph for safety cameras in 50mph zones (and similar)?

Drivers sitting so far forward that their face is 4" from the windscreen holding onto steering wheel for grim death, they usually have someone in the passenger seat with a baby on their knee:wallbash::wallbash:

I've seen that. They behave like rabbits in headlights.

I saw one worse.

An elderly lady at the wheel of a BMW E46 320d tourer. Widish street, fire engine approaching from back. Enough room to move to the side and allow it through.

She moves about 3 inches and leaves 2fit distance to the kerb, she thinks this is enough for said fire engine to get past. It ain't and she ain't got a clue about the size of her car as she would have moved it further.

Frightening actually

These people, more often women, do not realise that the airbag would likely kill them in an accident...and as for the child on the knee...mush in the event of an airbag going off....shudder.
