c200
Have c200 sport (daft as is as sporty as a cabbage) 97 when gearbox kicks down horrible long pause before any acceleration...even with foot flat on floor...in fact if you put foot right to the floor car wheezes...revs build but with no power.....sometimes car pulls away brightly however it is very slow most of the time...especially up hills, feels like ignition is retarded or fueling issue...or both...or is this an auto issue...anyone have any ideas?

Likely to be the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF).

Common problem, can be fixed by simply changing the part. try a search on here for similar threads...

Thanks for that will go see the used merc spares guy in St Earth..Mercman you heard of him? and see if that makes a difference..

Avoid getting a 2nd hand one, you could end up with the same problem a couple of months down the line...

It a location in Kernow near Hayle / Pz
St Erth is, it's St Earth that was puzzling me. ;)

Eurocarparts should be able to do you a new one for circa £100.

First step is to unplug the old one and see if the car runs better, if it does then it's almost certainly the MAF.

must agree with the maf suggestion, especially not to bother with a s/h one. get a bosh one from euro car parts or german and swedish. don't bother with pierburg for your car though, and make sure the bosch one has the same part number as yours.

I agree with the MAF diagnosis too.

You can get a Bosch unit, which is the original specification for you car, from Euro Car Parts for £100.

is the car and auto? if so take it to the garage and check your gearbox fluid and top as required. i just had the same problem. put some fresh oil in and its good to go.

It depends how you read this.

Lack of power + odd behaviour = often faulty MAF

But the title of this thread suggests that it MAY be a transmission or torque converter problem, ie the engine revs but you don't get as much propulsion as you expect as quickly as you expect.

The delay may be due to turbine trying to catch up with the impeller. I

don't know enough about oily stuff to be sure, but I wouldn't discount it just yet.

Have to say I was thinking more torque converter/gearbox rather than MAF on this one.

Blackwaterslim - Does it feel like slipping/riding the clutch on a manual car?

It is a Kernow thing...like PZ Menzpantz etc, better than ventongimps mind. Also Dyslexic Dyspraxic and often Dysfunctional! anyway Mercman big used Merc apres guy in St Erth / Earth!

yes does....worst when cold...however I pulled out to overtake a car t'other night and with foot to floor engine reves near redline car would not accelerate...all this impellor turbine talk has me ****ting myself.....and considering legal action! if the impellor and turbine aint in touch what does that mean?

Based on what you describe, then that does sound like the torque convertor may be taking it's final breaths.

The torque convertor transfers drive coming out of the engine through to the wheels (via the gearbox). Much of the time it transfers the drive through the fluid rather than a direct link.

Think of two big fans - one attached to the engine and one to the rest of the transmission - when the engine's fan spins the fluid moves and starts to spin the transmission's fan - and hence passes on drive through the transmission to the wheels.

Hence if you hold your foot on the brake whilst in Drive the engine doesn't stall - the fan connected to transmission is held stationary, but the engine's fan will spin, and so the engine continues to run.

What might be happening for you is that the engines's revs pick up fast but it takes a while for the transmissions fan to start spinning, and hence for a while your engine revs like mad without any real progress.

As the gearbox heats up so does the ATF, the ATF expands and makes the problem either go away or certainly less noticable.

Just get the gearbox oil changed and make sure the correct amount is put back. I had the same problem with mine and it was simply leaking from a corroded cooling pipe (for about 2 years, don't laugh).
