how do you check ATF level? poured 1/2 a litre in and seems a lot smoother....making me think its v low. just the ac to fix and weird heating system, the slimeball salesman is going to enjoy a view not unlike that of killerhertz profile pic. I think I have been mugged

And in English ? :D:devil:
We'll forgive you Ian - can't be often you venture the other side of the Tamar.

Talking of Ventongimps - that and Perranzabuloe are great place names.

You need a dipstick - either a proper merc one (available on e-bay) or a length of that springy curtain wire stuff marked at the right point - see here http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/64784-service-dip-stick.html several other threads on this as well.

Remove the tamper proof cap (rear driver side of engine) and insert wire/dipstick until it bottoms out, remove and check. Check should be done with oil hot (80oC) and after cycling the gear lever between D and R a few times.

Right so...long bit of curtain wire...new MAF thingy and away we go...oh another little symptom for you ..when you boot it the car slows down dramatically then backfires through the inlet manifild (little pops from the front) then picks up and away we go?

Hang on dude. 97 car? Not sure if you need the Mb dipstick. If your dipstick tube has a tamper proof cap then you will need an Mb dipstick AND the correct Mb atf (3353). If you have a dipstick attached to your cap then Dexron II or III will be ok.
