Just had my motor serviced today, it was a major service at my local Merc dealership out here, i also had a new aerial fitted and they fixed a wiring fault on one of my headlights.

I was expecting a hefty bill, so was pleasantly surprised when it came to 204 euros, happy with that! God knows what that would have cost in the UK, they even valeted the car as well!

Only downside was the smart car they gave me as a courtesy car, horrible little thing.

All in all though a happy dealer experience. What sort of price would that have been in the UK?

It depends what was done. A major service (maintenence) is oil, air, plugs, fuel filters and gearbox oil change. The parts would have come to at least £150!

That is very very cheap.

I just don't know how they can do it for that.

Can you scan the invoice (block out the chassis number and your address etc) as I would be very interested to see the parts prices.

Whereabouts in Germany are you? Just got back from Aschaffenburg (near Frankfurt a. M.) where we actually broke down with a gearbox ECU full of oil!

Courtesy of Kunzman (?) we were up and running again soon - permanent fix to be effected back here in the UK.

Wow. I know where I'm getting my car serviced then.

They are unbelievably good at that particular garage. I've had some little bits done on it before, and they often don't charge me for it. The car is well known to them as the previous owner took it there too, so they must like working on it or something.

There was a new girl on reception, so i wonder if she undercharged me or something. I'll try and get a scan of the invoice and post it for you to have a look. But unless my crap German is letting me down, they seem to have replaced everything they should have. I know for a fact that the two filters have been done, and that there are two lots of oil on the invoice.

320K and still with full Merc service histoy without any gaps, must be a record!

Just had a B service done to my C Class and it was £355 at Merc in Aberdeen.

That is very very cheap.

The dealers are taking a p... here, there was another thread where a member had to use the dealers in France much cheaper than here

Well done Matty. Last I heard you were going to move your 124 on.
Glad to see you still have it.

I just can't bring myself to get rid! Almost got a newer E class, but i couldn't get rid of the old girl as she runs so well. And when it's so cheap to run and maintain i'm sure i can keep it going til i leave Germany.

I'll have to see if i can get the rust sorted at the back end.

Bring it back home with you!! Check out ebay, left hooker 124s are going for a premium. Watch out for import duty though.
Many years ago I bought back a VW Varient 1600 from Belgium. (Lethal on the cobbled road in Belgium in the wet!!) I had to pay a few bob more than I thought on the duty but it worth it when I moved it on. Same as your 124 really, needed a decent car in UK for a while and didnt fancy getting something else back in UK - Well not on my wages at the time.
Something to ponder for you.

Don't fancy the fuel prices in the UK, it's not exactly frugal! Plus from what i hear, the UK dealers can't quite match the German prices!

She must have done. Germany isn't a cheap place to get cars serviced.

For what you've described, you've been massively undercharged.

Odd that, 'cos I'm sure when I was in Berlin week before last that petrol was about 1.4 euro and diesel about 1.2 (ish) a litre... so not too different from here.

But service is much cheaper and better. Even when just looking and buying some accessories, the customer service I received (in English! - imagine a German using a UK MB dealer...) at MB Berlin was first class, way better than any UK dealer I've come across.

So, why do we put up with such inferior and expensive service from our dealers?

I get subsidised fuel because of who i work for out here, perks of the job which almost make up for the slight downsides.

Her Maj eh?! :D

Your secret's safe with us!

In 2004 we broke down in Germany with the 107. Limped into MB Frieburg on a Sunday. Very polite sales staff found us a hotel for the night. On the Monday they diagnosed an axleshaft fault and said the part would be there Tues unless I wanted to pay for a taxi to bring it over there and then from Stuttgart . Workshop found us a better hotel for another night. Phoned me at nine in the morning to say the parts were in. They were fitted and we were on our way by 1pm.

Beat that GB.
