New engine and gearbox on the 2.6 ? This reminds me of the company 190's at a place I used to work in the late 1980's.Compared to the other lease stuff like Vauxhalls and BMW's the 190's where constantly going wrong ! I seem to remember the manual ones where particularly troublesome. The 1.8 looks an honest low spec car but the seller is doing himself no favours with the pics.

yeh what ever, considering that 90% of the 201 componentry is either shared or of very similar design and qaulity to/ with 124,129,126 models. Also considering that this era of Mercedes production is probably their finest hour, one must assume your previous employer was extremely unfortunate. My 88 190D 2.5 which covered 235k in 8 yrs of ownership with only normal wear and tear replacements must surely atest to this view.

I really like the first one :D looks old-skool

Does make you wonder why it needed a new box etc. they've usually got much higher mileages and still purr.

The W124 estates they had where more reliable. Why I can't say although I expect the manual 190's put more strain on the running gear than automatics.
The period in question was 1988-1991.The cars where lease cars doing 30k a year.
Before that in 1984 when I was a student I had a part time job at Hertz moving the cars around the country at night.I remember absolutely thrashing the 190's they had on the rental fleet. It was the car of choice as a "runner" to collect the other drivers as it cruised and handled so much better than the Ford stuff and BMW 316 MK 1's they also rented at the time.
