Hi all first time post.

I currently drive a 2001 SLK 320 and am looking to 'upgrade' to an SL 500 or 600 and want to spend a maximum of about £12K.

What would be the forum's opinion in terms of going for a newer car with higher mileage or an older car with less mileage?

What constitutes 'high' and 'low' mileages in your book?

Some people start to flap around the 100k mark, others will buy a 250k miler for fun...

Low side 20k - 40k

High side 70k+

Personally I would be concerned about service history at any mileage but far more worried about body / underpinnings and the state of both. Costs to put the latter right can be very high indeed and are not easy to assess. Good luck.
