Hi All
Following on from the other LPG thread I have made some calls and it looks like the cost of converting my Mevira would be £1345 inc VAT.
Working on 20k miles a year this would pay for its self in 12 months!

So my question is has anyone read anything of late that gives pointers on the tax situation for LPG next year?

In addition any other issues that mean I should not go for it?

Apologies for the semi-repeat topic of this post but I wanted to try and get some specifics on my situation.

Cheers
M

I get around 37mpg running on unleaded so was looking at in the region of 33 on LPG. My actual annual milage this year was 22k

Don't want to be Mr. Negative but is there a chance of HMG suddenly increasing the tax on LPG if it gets popular?

I seem to remember in the budget the duty on LPG will increase by slightly more than the duty on petrol for the next couple of years and the guarantee for low fuel duty for LPG was only until 2011.
After that it's anybodys guess. Like others have said, the more popular it becomes, the greater the temptation to hilke the tax

I think we all agree that duty on LPG will go up at some point, given lotusmark2`s mileage he can still make a saving until it goes up and will probably be financially beneficial in the short term for him

Hello

I think you are right to assume you will get around 20% less mpg using Gas, so 37mpg on unleaded relates approx to 31 mpg

However LPG is still half the price meaning equivalent 62mpg

I am sure LPG will go up, but also will the 'gap' between petrol and lpg always be there...?

If the conversion pays for its self in a yr, if you make anything over that then your laughing.

However if you sold your car now and added the cost of the LPG to what you have could you get a 1.4CDti? would that do 55-60mpg? but then you have to pay the derv prices ?

ideas...

I'm tempted to converst my bus, 40mpg and a big tank so win win. I just do 6K mile a year though

What's the capacity of the LPG tank that could be fitted in a Meriva (and what's the capacity of the petrol tank?)

The meriva has a 45L tank and I think (awaiting confirm) the LPG would be 35L (would be in the wheel well)

I'm guessing a 60 Litre donut tank in the boot? where ever the spare goes?

Will hold more like 45 Litres full. Not a huge range but if you still want a usable boot its either their or under the floor. Some even swao the petrol tank for LPG and leave a few gallon petrol tank as 'reserve'

Does the increased weight have any bearing on the mpg?

I'm quite curious, as the Astra Dual-Fuels we have at work get dire mpg (on LPG) but they spend all their driving time in the city and are not really driven with much thought to efficiency to be honest

I had a small donought tank installed in the ML's spare wheel well, the range was 130 miles....

But then a fill up was sub £20!!!

That was when lpg was 42p per litre though.

In an ML you really need a under slung tank 90 Litres or 100 Litres to get a desent range.

Mine hasn't got a spare wheel well? so its either in the boot (don't want) or where the saper goes underneath.

Day use to pay 34p Litre when he first started using it.

Still £0.56p is still a lot cheaper than Petrol or Derv ?

I have a couple of friends with 4.6 Range Rovers that have had LPG conversions done (two LPG tanks as well as the normal petrol tank), gives them a range of approx 600 miles, and over two years it has worked out as the equivalent cost of 92mpg and they pay less tax than another friends 1.2 Corsa!!!

Their advice is that LPG works best on larger engines!!!

Nick

How does the lower tax work?

My car will be £410 or what ever next year if I LPG it how does this come down?

think you have to send your installation certificate through to DVLA to have the fuel type change to dual. Not 100% sure though as I thought it only applied to factory fit?

Sorry my fault! - it was infact an underslung tank and the maximum size that could fit - 55ltrs.
