Luton Airport car park fire

Delusional.
Statistically an older (and therefore often poorly maintained) ICE car is a much higher fire risk… shall we ban those too?
Got some numbers to prove that?

That INCLUDE the extent of the fire damage when they kick off ?

And ... statistically... what's an actuary's assessment of the safety of an older, and often poorly maintained, EV ?

.

because change is scary for some… similar people would have existed when the horse and cart was phased out… 😅
While others are convinced that the first generation of a change is flawless

The parts I was in were based in sunny Milton Keynes!....so not too far from Luton.
Of course Luton Airport has this classy melody to forever remind us of it...

Ah yes the good old days…Put the old Airport right on the map…

Well lots of posts, not been a very good year for EV's and of course we have some owners on here, lets be honest what was their first thought when they saw the news that a car had set light to the whole multi story garage,I suspect it was not another EV fire its madness its happening to often, now what do you think the general public not owning EV's thought of course it was EV's are dangerous which in my opinion they are especially to your pocket, but we have that Australian's vlog and very good it was,he pointed out what many media people did not and that is the car was being driven to a parking space when it caught fire,he points out that the lead acid battery in the engine compartment was still going supplying the lights and maybe running the engine, the driver having baled out,the fire he pointed out was front left where the RR have the lithium battery under the passenger seat,so a fair bet that battery was the fire source.
Many good points made in the posts about where they should put the charging points for EV's it would seem not enough thought given by those in charge of siting EV charging places ,as always it will be money that sorts this mess out, insurance companies will raise premiums for owners, and all the various transporting of EV's will get hit by large increases, companies who have thought it great to install a few EV points at work may well decide to remove them.
The car makers are in trouble falling order books for EV's but having to meet targets for their introduction with fines if they fail, the likes of Toyota and Suzuki who have not jumped in the EV market may well be proved right

Can you please let us know how you know it’s a hybrid?

I posted a pic earlier with the car in question and the poster of the image had ran a reg check… which came back as a TDV6 RR…
Because all LRs have been mild hybrid for at least 4 years just not described as such. They all have a small electric battery to supplement the ICE

I consider myself lucky, will be flying from Luton this coming Sunday but would have gone last Sunday were it not for wanting to watch the final BTCC round live - in which case my EV wouldn’t have started the fire, but certainly would have been lost in it 🤔

going to costs us a bit more as with reduced parking we’ll be taking taxi - and need to arrive for 4am which adds to the cost

I believe

I believe there is still one non hybrid variant available?

How do you mean 'poorly maintained'?
What makes you think that an EV will be main dealer maintained after its warranty and service plan expire?

After the moment the average age of a Tesla is just over a year old. What happens when they average a decade old, like ICE vehicles. How will they be maintained when they have six figure mileages and ordinary people as owners?

Conjecture 🤔

I haven't red the whole thread so might be repeating what others have already said.

Battery fires are not a new thing; my BIL's VW Touran went up in flames parked up outside his house. It would have taken his other car and the house with it had his son not noticed the smoke, run out and shoved it into a space on the drive away from everything.

I'd assumed that it must have been some sort of fuel leak/spark but, no, the battery self-combusted.

Some more pictures of the car park appearing now ... fire damage mostly on the upper levels but the collapse took out other cars lower down. The car park was only built in 2019.

There’s no ‘maintenance’ of the battery pack though?

Exactly my point.

It’s naive to say that Teslas will never go wrong because they haven’t gone wrong so far, while low mileage, under warranty, and in the hands of their well heeled, fully expensed, first owners.

As opposed to smug looking drivers with their noses in the air? 🤣
Nothing “smug” about my appearance as I drive this bloody Tesla 3 which is far worse to drive than any BMW 3 I’ve driven these last thirty years.

Like many Tesla 3 drivers I’ll be glad to see the back of it.

Interesting Sat Nav, though, even if the ergonomics are rubbish. But a USP that’ll be soon copied into other ICE and EV vehicles.

AFAIK there are heating/cooling systems for the batteries which would presumably suffer from wear & tear / leaks / corrosion / etc. over the years, as (say) aircon systems and ICE coolant systems do.
