Matt Black paint - the new trend?

I wouldn't buy one, but think they look alright, a bit different.

There was a matt silver grey M3 outside ours the other night, looked pretty cool in the flesh.

Strangely I was reading the AutoCar review today about the SL Night Edition. That comes with matte black paint and instructions not to polish it, get oily substances near it, take it to an automatic car wash etc etc.

Sod that. I think it was a £4k option too.

It amuses me to think there are people out there who are prepared to spend so much money imitating what is effectively a ghetto finish. I bet the ghetto boys would love to swap their jalopies for a shiny new car.

Maybe people should trade cars if they really want an authentic ghetto look?

Matt Black, car or wheels? No!

A shiny car, with bright, clean looking wheels for me.

I really don't like it. I'm old enough to remember old 60's and 70's cars crumbling away with paint that had oxidised and lost all the gloss.

Also, black wheels look like they are caked in brake dust. And they also look too small and disappear into the arches.

Unfortunately a lot of people don't agree with me and I see plenty of cars with matt wraps and black wheels - often at the same time.

Each to their own but to me it's all very wrong.

I saw a truely dreadful large audi with a wrap that went over bages etc. Not impressed at all even if done properly.

My personal opinion, I cant stand matt black cars or just matt coloured cars in general.

The matt black wrap always makes me think of the cop cars in Robocop.

I can understand wrapping as a concept whereby maybe you have the option to buy a car in a naff unpopular colour to save money - and you can change it to what you want (subject to it making commercial sense of course).

Or where you have a car where it is so rare, the colour may not be a choice you can make...

Matt-black wrapping shows up bird crap well I understand...

wrapped cars could end up like bubble wrap - ie where people become obsessive about popping it
bored vandals might just stand by a car and peel a bit off..then a bit more

talking of rust i used to liberally coat the sills and stuff of my hillman imp in a material called tetroseal (dont know if its still around) but rot being rot it needed the black stuff raised higher and higher up the car over time
my dad used to comment if i didnt stop the imp would look more like a boat!

There was an S class parked on the street today, sprayed mat black, with mat black wheels, to me it looked dreadfull, spoiled a very nice car.

I don't know, some matt black motors have something about them;

Lee, you could go into business with developer215 with that, you can do the pick up's and he can do the final journey to the cemetery. :D

For me, matt black has been around for years.

You'd thrown your sportbike down the road, leaving you with wrecked fairings, bent handlebars and scuffed paint that you were too impoverished to fix.

Rip it all off, bang on a set of Cibie spots, a set of Renthal handbars and paint everything matt black - preferably with a stick.

Whilst I will leave others to discuss the aesthetics of matt (or satin) black cars, I can tell of the practical experience...

2001 I got a brand new motorbike which only came at theat time in satin black, except that within a few weeks it had gloss black patches where my leathers rubbed the tank. It never looked right after that:(
2009 Started the season with a satin black wrapped race car. Oil, rubber and brake dust was a complete nightmare to remove from it and it became gloss white after 3 races.
2011 Had a satin silver road car to develop and it never looked finished! (and it wasn't!) Became pearlescent gloss white in a matter of months. I can now clean it!:)

This morning a frost was on part of the car, and it provided a good opportunity to get an idea of what it would look like in matt black.

Check out the roof and bonnet versus the side

I'll stick with metallic black thanks :)

I like the look on certain cars small hatch backs and such but not on a big saloon and never on a merc or jag and such.
