Mattress on the roof of a W124 estate?

hi Howard, i do disagree with this.

With the forces of the wind, some elasticity must remain within the binding.
Bungie cords tied down tight is, from experience, the correct method.

This allows a secure fitment, tiny amounts of elasticity and a safe secure tight bind.

When using bungies, one must pull it very tight, to the point you nearly break your wrists, but this is how all my contractors tie things down to the roof of their vans for example.

Bungees are not fine for heavy stress / load situations Boss.

The uplift on a matress at 40 mph will be huge. Get some straps , thats why boats aren't held to trailers with bungee cords ....

I would have a word with your 'contractors' as the time will come when they are stopped for having an unsafe load , or even worse for causing an accident. No excuse for doing it on the cheap with bungees , when proper straps are pennies , smacks of being an amateur too. Police will take a dim view of something coming off the top of a van / car held down with bungees.

Totally agree with Howard.. Using bungee ropes can have you up for an insucure load charge as the load can NEVER be without the elasticity noted by The Boss above, also they do not have a SWL. I always use ratchet straps, and not the weak ones from B&Q etc but 5t or 10t swl heavy duty ones, (mind I do transport lots of steel etc on the roof of my van).
Also agree that your 'contractors' need a word in their shell like, very unprofessional and very unsafe way of working.

Ratchet straps are the way to go. Bungees are rubbish. You don't want any movement at all with loads on your roof.

Any tradesman who ties equipment on his roofrack with them is a cowboy.

Plus the fact that bungees are dangerous when they snap, I heard about a guy losing his eye when this happened.

i have just done that using the w124 posts and think rope drove it at 50 mph no porblem, previously i took 5 matresses to dump tied on top of the bars with rope but every body staying 100 feet away from the car again no problems w124 are good workhorse, brought a bike in the boot today

Here's another couple of greener options...

That's a good idea ...

Boss could pick up a big sign saying ' Unsafe Load - Please Stay 100 Feet Away ' when he buys his bungees .....

The last time I used bungees to attempt to attach 6 sheets of 8x4' OSB to the roof rack on the CE I nearly suffered a broken nose in the car park and then lost one on the right turn outside our office (never did find it as it catapulted itself into orbit).

I then bought some webbing straps.

Bungees are good for bike racks, camping and strapping a bag to a motorbike etc. - for anything large or heavy webbing and ratchets all the way.

Ive had a double mattress in my W202 Saloon before, and my rear seats dont fold down either!

You should be able to get it into your estate no problem if you tie it into a tube shape.

I had a double bed and matress in the back of a Ka before , it was proper squashed ....

Just wanted rid of my ex-girlfriend , and the bed was the last thing left , it wouldn't go in my CRX at the time , so it had to go in the Ka , i seem to remember driving like a hunchback ...

The bells , the bells .....

The mattress I can see... but how flexible was the bed.:)

It was in bits , headboard , footboard ( sleigh bed ) , all the slats and side rails.

I'm not saying it was a completely legal journey , but it all went in , and the back nearly shut too.

She became less flexible towards the end , that's why she had to go ;)

I was driving on the A25 (surrey hills) earlier today and 2 cars in front of me was a white G reg W124 300 petrol with a 4'6" divan mattress on the roof plus the rest of the bed on top. Yes you can do it but I would think 50mph is the max speed. Also as this one was smoking like a kipper i'm not sure how sweet the new bed would be smelling.

Method of fastening please.

1. Bungee
2. Ratchet strap
3. Rope
4. Blind faith
