Mercedes AMG sl600 sl60 made by amg rare

the wheels you have pictured ^a number of times are genuine 18" amg rims, but they are not two piece, they are one piece with bolts that make them look like two piece rims.
If you mean mine, you can see clearly that the polished outer rim and silver lacquered centre section are separate parts. There's a gap between them.

LOL!

Anybody else think this is a one-piece wheel?

^ Un Tighten all the bolts and see what happends :)

bill, i am not trying to be argumentative, and i am not trying to dump on your wheels.

my friend has a late late 320 18v 129sl, with 18" amg alloys on it, they are stamped '///amg' and they appear to be exactly the same as yours.

he has had them refurbished, and when they were removed, the refurbisher told him they were one piece.

now i must admit yours look like two piece alloys from the pictures, and, when i asked him, he said his did as well, when viewed from the front. i have not seen his when removed either, and am going on his infromation.

he says his deffinatly looked two piece, even down to apparently chrome bolts like yours. (he had them refurbed all one colour by the way!)

so, if you were to try to remove a bolt, and it came out, then they are indeed two piece.

if
you dont want to take one out, in case it marks them or make them leak, then you could take a wheel off and look from the back, andy says his were clearly not two piece when viewed that way, the ridge you can see at the front that is painted two coulours to exaggerate it does not, according to him, feature on the back of his alloys.

so either
yours are different wheels from his apparently identical ones, and amg made some one piece and some two piece 18" alloys of that design.

or
he is wrong and his are two piece, and the refurbisher gave him incorrect information, and he must have not 'seen' the ridge on the back of his alloys (there must indeed be one on his 'two piece' amg alloys)

or
yours will turn out to be one piece...

i dont mind, as i have datsun wheels on my 124, and would not use any of the over weight, over priced and all to common amg alloys, i had carlsson three piece 18" on mine for a while, but they were also well heavy.

i have discovered light wheels make much improved performance.

Or your mates are reps that just so happen to have the AMG logo on them. I've seen plenty of reps with the AMG logo, so it is possible.

I have to say ive always thought those were one piece wheel too.. Bill, when you next take the wheels off, have a look from behind as they will have "nuts" if they are a two piece wheel.

I will have a look at the back, however there is a clear (but small) gap between the rim and hub sections on my wheels ... it's nothing to do with paint colours.

Does it really matter though?

They are nice wheels and suit the car :)

It can matter because most alloy wheel cleaners shouldn't be used on split-rims (because it leeches into the joint between the parts).

Apart from that I'm interested because they are universally referred to and sold as "AMG I 2-piece".

Guys, those wheels are TWO-piece !!

They are made by BBS and held together by fasteners securing the centre piece to the wider rim.

I have personally refurbished two sets of these in the past - one of the easiest sets of wheels to split and refurb.

There is a replica wheel which looks identical - but it is single piece and does not usually carry the '///AMG' stamp.

Whilst it is a lovely looking wheel, it is not an ideal wheel to improve road handling due to the fact it is very heavy (much more so than other multi-piece wheels in it's peer group) and increases unsprung weight of the car. Totally contrary to the whole point of a multi-piece wheel !

BTW, these two piece wheels will not leak if bolts are loosened, as they do not have a join betwen inner and outer rim. Only if you distured the air valve in the process of loosening would air leak, but unlikely.

Genuine AMG, BRabus, Carlsson wheels are all commissioned to quality wheel manufacturers like Ronal, BBS, OZ Racing....none of these top tier wheel manufacturers do fake bolts.

there speaks the one who knows, jay's word is gospel and he knows everything about amg...

andys wheels definalty dont have nuts on the back and are off a top of the range r129 and are not reps, the wheels are 99% gonna be one piece if he says they were.

and no it doesnt really matter, they do suit the 129 shape.

hmmmm...I must say, I think your mates wheels, if single piece, are indeed fakes. I just can't see AMG bothering with fake studs!

look carefully at bills picture of his wheel, note the position of the valve.

now think what the hidden bit of a valve actually looks like...

look at the picture of the earlier three piece rims, look where the valve fits, straight into the inner cavity, through the rim.

look at the angle of the bolts in bills wheels and ask yourself, is it possible that a bolt can hold the center part of the wheel to a wheel rim, in that position? so the bolt only bites into the same space a valve seals? ie it is about 4mm long?

dont forget, amg were separate to merc when the had oz et al make the earlier three piece wheels, when merc took over, they would quite probably make cheaper one piece wheels, and make them look multi piece to carry on the 'tradition' of multi piece wheels. might explain why those 18" amg wheels are ridiculously heavy as well?

looking at the valve on that picture makes me think even more that it is a one piece wheel, the length of the valve and where its fitted would, IMHO mean the bolts would also have to go 'through' into the center of the wheel, or in order to change the valve, it looks like you'd have to 'split' the wheels? and as talibirs says above genuine split rims dont 'leak' when a bolt is removed.

i am gonna take one of andys wheels off and examine it, and report back.

talbir also said he's refurbed a set of these and they are two piece. So confusing....and they're not even my wheels! At least my bolts are fake!! lol

The only type of wheel that I have seen to have a nut and bot is a 3piece type.

2piece wheels will have titanium studs, if they are plastic the wheels are fake.

OK I have had a very close look at my wheels tonight, and am 100% certain that they are 2-piece and manufactured by BBS - as Talbir said.

The outer rim, tyre and valve form a single unit. The cast centre piece is bolted to a machined face on the rim, with the valve stem passing through a hole in it.
