Mercedes E320 Coupe (124) Reverse issue

Hi

My cousin has a 1995 M Reg E320 Coupe (124) and some times when he puts the car into reverse it doesn't move, any ideas of what this could be?

Fluid Level Correct? Last Service was?

If the ATF level is O.K.
Then it's possible you're looking at a rebuild...
Failure to engage reverse OR SLOWLY engage is one of the first symptoms...

I would try draining auto fluid from box and converter then fitting new filter and oil.

It might help.

There's also a known issue that causes this so a Google search might help.

Mine does this when the box is warm, not hot. So, when I start, I've got reverse. If I go 8 KM down the road it MAY fail to select reverse. Once it's hot, all's well.

Annoying isn't it?

providing the linkage is working OK and not failing to engage due perhaps to the engine/gearbox mounts being 'shot', then the likely problem is with the plates and sealing rings on brake B-3 piston, and they will need to be replaced.
