Mercedes EPC (parts catalogue) on-line - proper version !

Crash Cause??

all sorted, much beter than the russian one... and i chose MB cars, smart and commercial vehicles, all for the same price.. cant be bad...
What was the CRASH problem in the end?

The MB parts catalog is now online, at a cost of 15 Euros + VAT per annum for access to the EPCnet application ..

Richard

This has just saved me a big headache, as I have been struggling with a dead EPC clone for some time! (I know it's naughty, but at that time it was the only option...)

However, the Online EPC works beautifully, for all serious DIY purposes.

And tight as I am, I would suggest that 15euro a year is a total bargain.

This info is solid gold for the "Haynes 5spanner brigade":D

Have you seen this site?
www.autocd.com

They sell Car systems such as the EPC.net and WIS.net as mentioned here plus activation keys! Sounds dodgy, but quite a comprehensive site.

Thats because it is dodgy .. EPC part numbers get changed every month, so for 15 euros per annum, EPCnet online really is the best way of getting EPC

Im all for paying EUR15,- to keep up Mercedes excellent system, BUT I only have access to the internet say 60% of the time or less. Would be good if they provided a time coded disk for local usage.

They do - see the bottom of this page. Don't know how much they charge, though.

I've found EPC net to be disappointingly slow.

Have you spotted item 7.4 in the Ts & Cs? €5000 penalty for disclosing EPC information to third parties. :eek:

They use the same T&C for WIS and those T&C existed before EPCnet was made available.

I can see why the penalty for disclosing info on a $$$ service per annum could be 5k. = but on a 15-euro service ..

But, in reality you have to disclose EPC info to 3rd parties - i.e you put part numbers on bills and explain stuff to your customers, and in fact when you order the parts (dealer is 3rd party). So my view is that that clause is mostly unintentional and very likely to be un-enforceable

Also, in reality, making part numbers available means more genuine part sales (and makes the dealer very happy when you go in with a list of part numbers)

I suppose if you managed to extract loads of pictures from EPC and put them on-line - or somehow made a replica of that russian site, then you are asking for trouble

But, saying that, the clause in the document has meant I haven't updated my COMAND-APS part numbers document for a while. But I will find a friendly dealer who lets me have 30 mins on his EPCnet shortly ..

ps, EPCnet online seems Ok to me, its not blinding, but its pretty good. Yes, EPCnet at the local dealer with a local server is much quicker - but its still saves me a load of hastle, and i'm just a hobbyist !!

The link 'this page' has expired :eek: !! But thank-you very much for the info.

Richard, if your Richard from http://www.mercupgrades.com/ then thank-you very very much for a great site! I used it to install COMAND but then decided I needed UHI so I let Steve (MBenzNL) finish it off. The information provided is in one word 'par-excellence'!

Has anyone tried to sign up recently? I can't get passed the first page as it's asking for a VAT number.

What would happen if you weren't VAT registered?

I could not either.....

Has anyone got around the VAT number as mentioned by Wully and BlackC55 above? Decided to sign up but have been unable to register.

Snap!

Probably something to do with this.

Access authorization, registration, provision
Snap-on grants an access authorization for access to the Technical Information on the following conditions:
2.1 The User belongs to the authorized category of persons under the Block Exemption Regulation (GVO no. 1400/2002 of 31 July 2002) with their registered office within the European Union or the European Economic Area:

* Independent workshop
* Manufacturer of repair equipment
* Independent parts dealer
* Publisher of technical information
* Automotive club employee
* Breakdown assistance employee
* Provider of inspection and testing services
* Employee of a basic and further training facility for motor vehicle mechanics

Please notice its Snap-on tools who are refusing you access NOT the manufacturer Mercedes Benz. Those corporate lawyer dudes certainly earn their money.;)

On another note a poster on "another forum" has indicated that if you are one of those low lifes that has an illegal copy of the WIS or EPC on disc DO NOT UPGRADE TO WINDOWS VISTA cos you will have great difficulty in making them work ! Thats according to him and I could never condone such practices anyway.

Our shop is VAT registered so we don't have this problem but i did contact them on behalf of a mate who wanted access for personal use doing his own service work and such like, basically they said that they are considering making WIS/ASRA available without a VAT number but they did not mention EPC or TIPS.

They have not long moved to Snap-On we only had to enter the number this renewal cycle before that they never even asked.
