March issue of What Car in their Car of the Year awards puts the S320cdi as the top luxury car. Here's some quotes: -

WHAT CAR?
CAR OF THE YEAR 2007
WINNER
Luxury car Mercedes-Benz S320 CDl

The S-C1ass is still head and shoulders above its rivals. It's another easy win this year

Make no mistake, Mercedes-Benz rules this sector. Many have tried to undermine the S-Class's dominance - Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Lexus being the main protagonists - but the gulf between the flagship Merc and its rivals remains as wide as ever.

Part of this is due to the undeniable cachet of the badge, but image alone is not enough in the cut-throat world of the business traveller.
Running costs are an essential consideration and the S320’s CDI diesel engine is not only smooth and powerful. its also extremely fuel-efficient, averaging 34mpg. The Mercedes boasts the best residual values in its class, too.

Even if the diesel S-Class was an absolute money pit, we'd still find it hard to resist.
Its built to the most exacting standards using the finest materials and will whisk its lucky owner and a trio of business colleagues to high-pressure meetings in sublime comfort. It will also soothe away the troubles of the day on the return journey.

Most impressively, the air suspension soaks up bumps in a quiet, cushy fashion, yet when the route becomes more demanding, you have only to press the Sport button to tighten up the car's body movements and benefit from greater control.

Equally, all the instruments and major controls work with rewarding precision. That includes the brakes, which are hugely powerful and full of feel.

The cabin is an oasis of tranquillity. There's acres of room in which to stretch out, while scrupulous attention to detail, lashings of high-grade leather, polished wood and aluminium switches endow the cabin with unsurpassed quality.

Other tasty quotes include: -

The S class has already beaten every rival in petrol form, but now we can adjudicate the best diesel luxury car on sale in 2007.

At motorway cruising speed the S class is virtually silent…
..the most cosseting ride imaginable ….

Its vast 560 litre boot is deep and a useful square shape……

The S class is exquisitely built, with fine shutlines, lavish materials, lustrous paintwork and cool aluminium switchgear.

… jumping into a Jaguar from the Mercedes is akin to turning right rather than left in an Airbus.

The new Mercedes-Benz S class sets lofty targets for every luxury rival: build quality is exquisite; it relaxes or rockets at the driver’s whim; and the roomy cabin pampers and soothes like no other. In short it makes you feel special.

Thanks for posting that. I had a new S Class a couple of years ago and it was a truly amazing car - 320 petrol iirc. Brand new just off the back of the delivery wagon. It was absolutely stunning. It is a world leader particularly in toys so deserves this award. imho - I'm sure others will disagree though ;)

The new S class is an absolutely fantastic car. by far the most luxurious car I have been in.

Yes compared to the 220 it is a totally different car a few of my colleagues have them now and i have driven the 221, the ride is much better and the seats are so much more comfortable, amazing how they can improve on the 220. You wouldn't think they could change the makeup of the car by so much. I've had the 220 for nearly five years now. It's been a brilliant car.

Mind you i say that every time they bring out a new SClass, i go back as far as the 450 SEL the 126 and the 140 all great cars apart from the 140 looking like a Tank. Can't wait to take delivery of the 221 at the end of the year.

I'm currently driving my 4th S-class and they have all been brilliant cars to drive. For someone like me who prefers luxury and comfort and silence, the S-class is by far the best car around.

I switched from BMW 10 years ago and have never regretted it. When I had to move on from my W140, I wanted to have an open mind so I tried Jaguar, BMW, Audi and Lexus - but the Mercedes (W220) was just a better driving experience.

The W140 might have looked like a tank, but it was in fact a brilliant car to drive and hailed as by far the best luxury saloon in the world for good reason.

Looks are a matter of taste, I guess, but as a car the W140 was far above anything else in its days. I got as much pleasure out of driving it on its last day than I got on the first day I drove it.

That is the trouble! I bought my 220 series with 6000 miles on the clock in April 2006 and now it reads 23,500 plus. And all of that is private mileage. Such a pleasure to drive; no excuse for a trip is too small.:)

Living and working in central london, all my mileage is private as well and I'm sorry to confess that even if I have no reason to take it out, I find myself going for a drive over the weekend :o

So we'll be seeing it at a gtg soon then ?

Absolutely. I went to the one at Hamble and another at Port Solent, both in 2006. Good fun and nice to put a name to faces. Or should I say a face to names.

S320cdi. :o Taxi  ;)

Well that's the joy of Mercedes isn't it. If you still prefer petrol they offer it. But the days when only taxis wanted diesel are long gone.

About 60% now choose diesel and I am a recent convert. The performance is generally better now than a petrol car of similar size. The torque is amazing and the effortless low down power is marvellous. The S320cdi is actually only 3 litres but it has almost identical performance to the 3.5 litre petrol. As What Car said at cruising speed it is virtually silent. It returns 34 mpg and yet does 0-62 in under 8 seconds and has a top speed near the 150 mark. For most people that is more than sufficient.

Many also like the fact that the diesel version has lower CO2 emissions than the petrol versions, lower servicing costs and much better residuals. Quite a package.

the new W221 S class is indeed a lovely car.

However, there isnt any new technlogy in this car that already existed in a 2006 BMW 7 Series.....

7 series is due for replacement in 2008, it will be interesting to see how the new 7 Series improves on the S class.

Dont get me wrong, i think the new S class is fab and will be considering one when i eventually sell my 7 series, but i'm not sure how much extra car i will be getting from my 2003 7 series, apart from a smoother "idrive" copy

;)

I thought the W211 was the 1st to feature Distronic (auto braking) and nightvision - not the 7 series? :)

Correct me if Im wrong

I test drove the CDI 220 when it first came out and the petrol, it's not how quite it is when you are in the car its the noise it makes when you arrive or when it's stationary.
When i tested the two cars together i had them both running at the same time, the sound of the CDI, it could well have been a Black Cab. I have also tested the 221 CDI and that is still noisy maybe not as bad, mind you i am five years older.
I guess i just can't bring myself to buy a diesel. I agree the torque is amazing plus if you are doing lots of miles it makes economical sense, it's just that noise the diesel engine makes.
Once a petrol head always a petrol head. :)

So exactly what new innovations did the 7 series introduce that weren't available on previous s-class apart from idrive?

I'm a previous BMW driver and have nothing against the 7 series, but the fact is that the last 3 generations s-class have all set the tone for BMW and others to follow, not the other way around.

I assume you meant W221 rather than W211... Distronic was already available on the W220. The W221 features Distronic Plus which, in combination with Brake Assist Plus will bring the car to a full stop.

I believe that Night view Assist was indeed first introduced on the W221.

There is also the newest version of Pre-Safe, contributing further to the S-class' reputation as a car that is about 3 times safer than a Volvo or the BMW 7 series, according to DfT road accident stats (http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/datatablespublications/vehicles/carsmmrisk/)

What noise? I have the V6 CDI in my E Class and it is absolutely silent. the car wafts along witha perfect ride, good pulling engine in absolute silence.
And the S class is said to be even better. The only sound is when starting from cold and that soon disappears.
However, in my earlier years I enjoyed cars that made a noise when you drove them, especially if they had a big V8.
I'd suggest that you try one of the latest CDI's with the V6 engine. You still might prefer the petrol but I think you would agree that it defines silence, smoothness and effortless driving.

7 series had night vision same time as the S class was introduced. Stop/Start distronic, yes ok, but my 2003 series has radar cruise down to 20mph

dont get me wrong, i would love a nice new S class but i dont think it has as many new features as i would have liked. Main reason i have the 7 series over the W220 is because of the MB build quality of late, which i believe they have improved upon on the latest S class

but how much MB have copied the BMW design (interior & exterior).....

my main point was that the 7 series was introduced in early 2002 - its taken 4 years for MB to introduce a compariable model. In a years time, BMW will introduce the next 7, which i assume will raise the bar above S class more.

It seems to me that the 2002 E65/66 model was a response to the W220, rather than a predecessor to the W221...

The E32 was a clear response to the W126, the E38 a reaction to the W140.
