Mercedes Top Luxury Car

Sauber c9 mercedes did 247mph on the mulsannes straight and so chicanes were then introduced.QUOTE]

This is true, but in 1989 when the green and white WM Peugot had covered half the laps of the leader and was definately not doing well they went for gold and recorded 406kph (253.75 mph) down the straight, made the headlines in Le Maine papar the next day, apparently the Porker 917`s were even quicker than that in the 70`s in qualifying trim getting to over 260, this is of course legend and may not have any truth in it,

From what I can make out part of the arguement is that diesels produce all their power low down and this is desirable, true, but then so does a big V8 petrol, having owned a fantastic E55 for a year and I have driven an S320 for about a month I would go for the effortless and seemingly endless power that comes from that big V8 petrol while my wallet lets me, when it doesnt I will go for a diesel.

As far as purchase price and servicing are concerned, MB diesels are the same price as petrols but residuals are much better and servicing can be cheaper due to the cars going longer between oil changes or needing spark plugs.
Rant over.

Good if you're buying new.

Not so good if you're buying used as it really complicates the decision given the price discrepancy.
