Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

Bah, that was an expensive morning. I decided to order in various bits and pieces - all the fuses are old and fragile, so got a whole load of ebay, ditto jubilee clips in various sizes (there is nothing more cost inefficient than having to pop out at various times to get one or two little things).

Then ordered in various fixings, a new chrome steering wheel horn rim, and lots of bits and pieces at good prices from Niemoller (much horribly expensive so not ordered). A Euro rate of 1.33 to the £ does help!

Enquired of GAT in the US about their carpets and seat covers in Leather too.

Put in a request to the guy with the breaking coupe for a whole list of stuff.

I have decided about the likely condition of the restoration. The car is too far gone to do a makeover, so will need full respray and new interior. This means that parts that would otherwise be fine cosmetically on an original condition car will look tatty set against all the new work so good stuff is required. Far too much of my stuff is mildly corroded and needs replating etc. So, I am aiming to get as much of a wow factor as possible*.

So one of my kidneys will shortly be for sale. One careful owner, far fewer miles than the age would indicate, does process tea, beer and coffee exceptionally rapidly.

* I am inclined to think I shall change the colour for this. I think with an entirely renewed red interior the white paint is not going to set it off well, and as I will have the choice of colour if a full respray is needed, I may go for a rich metallic to set it off. The anthracite grey 172 or the beige grey 728 both have the necessary richness to match the red and look stunning in the flesh.

Bronzebraun is stunning but I'm not sure about the red interior

Grey and red (or burgundy )is a good combo, also navy. I do reckon no matter what you go for it will be better than the original white. Whatever you decide I'd opt for an original W114 colour if possible. Then again if you are giving a full repaint plus a new interior the world is your oyster, within reason.

Nial on head! That's a beaut, love the wheel trims & white walls.

I agree on the Bronze brown - there is a guy locally with a W116 in that or similar colour - he has de-chromed the car and the brightwork is now deep bronze, almost black. It looks stunning, but not with red.

I want to stay original within reason, but once you cross the line on one original thing everything else is then up for grabs.

It's finding a colour that adds both depth and shape to what is quite a linear, flat car.

The beige grey does look really nice on a 111/2 and a 113 but no photos on a /8

Silver and anthracite look good, but I'm not certain the world needs another MB in silver or dark grey!

That looks more like Tunis Beige - I think their description is wrong. Either that or sand beige

I agree that sadly those W114 pictures are not particularly representative of the colour. There does seem to be a lot of reflected light which imparts an almost gold colour to most of the shots. Perhaps the colour balance in the camera was a bit off as well? I guess its possible they got the colour wrong but on an unmolested example from SanDiego you would think the colour plate would still be there? Unfortunately I have failed to find another example of a W114 coupe in BeigeGrau-metallic. That said if it turned out as well as the W111 COUPE that would be OK.

I have been going through the manuals Grober sent me. Looking at the engine removal section reference is made to disconnecting the oil cooler if an automatic is fitted. Well, my car has an oil cooler. Then there is the fact of the gearbox knob and sheath looking like a W123 rather than a Series 1 car. I just wonder if at some point an auto was removed and a five speed manual fitted, possibly for fuel economy reasons.

I wondered if I could check my chassis number to see what was originally on the car 114.022-20-009622 is the number. I have no idea how to check it.

Here is a colour scheme of a friends car that looks stunning with a red interior and shiny chrome - if it helps...?

I didn't get a picture of the upholstery but the red beading is the same colour and should give you an idea.

114 chassis.
022 engine.
2 r/h/d.
0 manual transmission.
009622 chassis number.

That's my bad guess on your VIN.

Silver always works well with red, ditto dark grey.

Silver grey and red - a very traditional MB combination

I prefer anthracite grey though

Oh well, it was always manual. I wonder where the oil cooler come in.
