mobil 1 ESP 5W-30

I'm sorry if I'm opening an old debate about what engine oil is better,but to me isnt clear.Currently I'm using mobil 1 5w-40 and I'm thinking of replacing it with Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30.Is it a good idea? The car we are talking about is W203 2001 220 cdi with 170000 miles on the clock.

The ESP formula will be good for your high mileage engine.

The 40 viscosity is not really needed in UK climate, and at any rate a high mileage engine will usually have looser internals so the lower viscosity 30 oil will probably be better for it.


Said that always check your service book and the manufacturer's published oil spec to ensure that you are using engine oil with the correct MB Sheet spec for your engine e.g. 229.51 etc (Mobile 1 should be OK, but still - I recommend to always double check before buying and gilling up).

As above both grades are suitable for the uk climate. ESP is a low saps oil ( low ash and sulphur content) designed for cars with a dpf fitted in the exhaust system. Your car is unlikely to have one. But check your hand book to find the correct spec, 229.3, or 229.5. For cars with a dpf it would be 229.51.

I don't follow the logic of that argument. I would have thought a thicker oil, the 40, would be better for a worn engine. It is said that cars run on higher viscosity oil can suddenly throw up oil leaks when a lower viscosity oil is used.

30 grade oil became popular as the lower viscosity means less drag and it supposedly helps fuel consumption.
