Last Thursday I passed a speed camera van on my way to work. Speed limit was 50mph. I was doing 53/54 and I know my L200 speedo reads slightly lower than actual speed.
On the way home the speed camera van had moved to another location where the speed limit was 30mph.
I was doing 33/34.
How long should I expect to be waiting for a letter to land on my door mat?

Forever it won't happen [emoji57]

I was clocked last year for 34 in a 30, had the pleasure of attending a speed awareness course!

Generally they allow 10% and I have yet to drive a vehicle that understates speed (over 20 cars) as manufacturers tend to play it safe and set speedometers up to slightly overead. The only exception would be where different size wheel/tyre combinations have been used.

I thnk most vehicles speedo's are reading plus the speed you are doing,I always check mine on one of those 30mph digital read out posts that are there to advice you of your speed, my vehicle speedo is reading 2 mph than the actual speed.

But the OP say's he knows his speedo under reads, which would suggest it's not on standard wheels/tyres?

Would be the only explanation if he measured correctly and not using something inaccurate..

By law you have to receive notification of an offence within 14 days, that is a letter dated within 14 days of offence.

In a 30 zone the guidelines are to get a FPN for speeds between 35 and 49 mph (summons above that), with the option of a SAC up to 42 mph if you qualify (i.e. not done one within the last X years). But as mentioned you can be unlucky and get done for lower speeds ... IIRC the lowest possible is actually 33 mph due to stated tolerances on measuring equipment.

A speedo that under-reads is illegal btw.

Well the speed camera I use is of coures advising you that the limit is 30 mph,and puts up the speed it has measured for your car as it approaches, with it putting up 30mph for my car the digital read out on my dash says 32mph,a citroen I tried it with was 33mph,when the camera said 30mph,I think it is the best way to get a idea what your actual speed is,all you have to do is find one of these speed cameras on a post the one I use is on the B1414 at Little Oakley,it does not do number plate recognitian,it would not matter if you went past it at 60mph,it would show your speed, but it is not a great thing to do as there is a sharp left hand bend not far past the camera.I am sure something must have changed on the op's car as posters have suggested for his speedo to register under.

I have checked speedo accuracy with a Garmin satellite GPS unit AND a Tom-Tom GPS used at the same time they always agree with each other and always disagree with the car. Of all of the cars and hire cars I have done this with MBenz were always the closest to the GPS speed. But ALL cars/vans were over reading by a small margin.

My 2006 C55 AMG ?..71mph on the digital display with cruise control on = 70 mph on the GPS units. same at 81 mph = 80 true mph.

Like PetrolPete, I have checked the speedo on my C220 against my TomTom Go6000 and my true speed is a couple of MPH less than my speedo reading, which is pretty good compared to my 968 cab where the speedo is 10% high across the entire speed range I've checked, roughly 20-85mph indicated.

Because it's illegal for speedos to read low it's standard for them to be set up to read slightly high, to allow for manufacturing tolerances, tyre wear, etc.

It may read up to 10% higher than actual speed , but not lower by any amount .

IIRC it is not the date of the letter ; it has to arrive on your doorstep on time . If it comes a day late , it fails .

That is why the Interpretation Act specifies the following-

References to service by post.

Where an Act authorises or requires any document to be served by post (whether the expression “serve” or the expression “give” or “send” or any other expression is used) then, unless the contrary intention appears, the service is deemed to be effected by properly addressing, pre-paying and posting a letter containing the document and, unless the contrary is proved, to have been effected at the time at which the letter would be delivered in the ordinary course of post.

It is the time of delivery that counts . If the post is slow , not your problem.

Are you sure? AFAIK they don’t use recorded delivery so how can you prove when you received the paperwork on your doorstep?!

Lots of these devices around , but who knows how accurately calibrated they are ...

Best way is time over a measured distance ; there are still mile posts on Turnhouse Rd , Edinburgh, which the police used to use to check speedometers in their cars ; one mile at a steady 60 should take exactly one minute .

That is the law , proving it is another matter , witness statement , the postie . CCTV , timed and dated showing the delivery .
