Speeding ticket

I've seen different limits over different lanes on the M25 occasionally. I wonder how that works if what the instructor said was correct?

Interesting, I thought I'd seen that too but it was stated very clearly that the same speed limit always applies to all lanes. Definitely not the case in other countries where you can even have different limits active in the same lane (e.g. for cars and trucks).

If the instructor was correct I guess you'd have to assume the display was faulty (as in the example we were shown where lane 3 had no limit displayed but 1 & 2 did) and take the lowest figure shown as being the current one.

Isn’t that the case here too? NSL for trucks/cars? 🤷‍♂️

Not really...different classes of vehicles have different speed limits...but that limit is the same in all lanes. Of course HGVs and trailers/caravans cant go in the outside lane at any speed!

I think SMART motorways would have been great as a concept in an office room, but in reality most drivers try and go as fast as they can & brake for the cameras which rather defeats the point.

I’d argue the above and the lack of hard shoulder makes them more dangerous than good old fashioned motorways.

You can get different lane speeds, for example going south on the M5 two left hand lanes going to Bristol joining the M4 40 MPH due to congestion ahead. The two outside lanes going to the South West derestricted sign .

I think that layout counts as two separate 2-lane carriageways though (hence vehicles that wouldn't be allowed in lanes 3 or 4 can use the outside lane at that point).

True, though some motorways have average speed cameras (the M3 west at the junction with the M25, for example).

Isn't that only for roadworks?

Very true....I will admit to towing caravans in the outside lane once in a while.....but usually only to get past two trucks doing one of their usual 10 mile "elephant race" overtakes.....but I back in the instant I get past. I feel that sitting behind them to avoid going into the right lane only adds to the problem.

Absolutely....I never implied I wasn't. But we nearly all break the law in one small way or another every time wet get behind the wheel. I made a judgement call, it was not dangerous and would not pose an issue of danger to other road users....so I went for it. It's not something I would do every time I tow though.

The problem with SMART motorways are that they're too dumb.

In an ideal world, once the SMART motorway cameras switch on, they should be average speed cameras which would reduce the speeding up and slowing down thing that some drivers do. They should also have a camera that activates a minute or so after a red cross is displayed to stop people from using it as a shortcut.

Says the C200 driver... whose ideal world is perhaps not that of the average AMG driver. It's certainly not mine...;)

Traffic light cameras at junctions are almost always 'dual purpose' (capturing both speeding and going through on red), so it's possible the motorway gantry cameras already do this.

If not, lane closures are activated manually by the control centre ... who have a live video feed. So vehicles running in a closed lane could probably be recorded and prosecuted using that if necessary.

Well maybe. Most AMG drivers Ive seen on the road are knobs, weaving through traffic and going at 60mph down residential streets.

I digress however, the whole point is we all know the government are going to put these systems in place to "reduce" speeding i.e. get some revenue. Itd just be better if they did it properly!

I think most of those are "AMG" drivers....
