I had a £10 phone from Sainsbury's whilst mine was in for repair, it even came with £1 credit - wow! Ok it was basic, polyphonic (?) ringtones, no picture messaging, but it was quite fun to get back to basics!

Actually; funnily enough during our CEOPS training we were recomended to prefer monthly contract phones simply because you get a "log" of all phone calls at the end of the month which you can check against a list of known friends...
From a financial perspective, a p&g does offer more control; so its really down to how much "reason" the child has. If they are able to "control" themselves (which is a pretty good skill for the to learn) monthly is great...

These are good for emergencies - I keep one in the car, small and light, they are under a tenner on PAYG, e-ink display so the battery lasts ages and they only do voice calls and SMS... worth pennies so no-one is going to nick it!
