Wrong reg number on my car.

Sounds like all that is wrong is the plates fitted to your car ; if your Carlisle dealership swap them and stick the bill to Poole all should be happy .

https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ can be used to check the two registrations to see which is taxed.

If it is on the wrong car then I assume the lease company has to sort it?

Being a 16 plate, there won't be an MOT issue.

Insurance wise, surprised an issue didn't come up when the reg didn't bring up a car on the database and the details have to be given manually. Anyway, just a call to correct the mistake as it will only be the plate that is wrong. May get an admin fee which you should look to recover from the dealer who made the mistake.

Probably far less issue than having to deal with the DVLA if the V5 was incorrect.

If

Often when insuring a new car you end up going by chassis number. If fact it's worth checking the policy. If your lucky that's how it was set up.

Otherwise I reckon it's change the number plate and sort the insurance out. Harsh if they charge a fee in these circumstances.

Probably because when a car is first registered, it takes about a week for the Experian databases to update so most time the insurers have to manually input the details, so they would have been none the wiser. Only at renewal time would it have come to light.
Sounds like the dealer fitted the wrong plates on the wrong car at pdi time. Happens quite frequently, but most times get picked up by salesmen or valeters or, worst case, customer when collecting.
Proves how easy it is because you didn't notice when you collected the car.

Tbh the car was delivered to my house. The lease company emailed me finance documents (from Mercedes Benz Financial Services) to sign two weeks before delivery. Obviously they gave me the reg number so I could arrange insurance to start on delivery date.

When the car came it had the right reg number on it as far as I was concerned. A month later the V5 shows up and is filed along with other car documents. Had I checked all the details I would have spotted the discrepancy.

Where I used to work the Finance Director chopped in her E-class estate for a new R-Class. The E had a personal reg. ---321S and the Mercedes dealership were supposed to transfer it on to the new car. Well, she picked it up and merrily drove round in it for a couple of weeks until one day it was parked outside the factory and I noticed the plates read S321---. Cue an angry phone call when I pointed this out to her..

Cheers,

Only a poor mans car John. :(

Could the E220 actually pull the skin off a rice pudding? :dk:

Now, if I had your car :bannana:

138mph in a C220 estate it would seem - and they are less slippery than your E.

Go for it .

I'd visit your local factors or halfords immediately with your V5 and have new plates made and fitted with the correct reg. on it then claim the cost back.
Or contact the supplying dealer and have them send the same over by same day delivery or better still a guy to fit.

I've no idea what would happen if your current incorrect plate flashed up on a traffic cars anpr system but wouldn't want to have that conversation with the police when you now know that the car is displaying an incorrect number.

Supplying dealer is 500 miles away so sending a guy over somewhat unlikely !

I'm sure though they could arrange for their nearest partner to do this. ;)

If it was me I'd either fix it myself or leave the car parked up and place the problem firmly with the guys that fitted the wrong plates in the first place.

What I wouldn't do is drive it one mile more knowing it has wrong plates fitted.

A quick look at the keyboard suggests that due to the position of F H J on the same row, it's an easy one to get them juxtaposed.

It's booked in on Tuesday at MB Carlisle to have a new knock sensor fitted. They will make & fit new plates at the same time.

To pass the time whilst I'm waiting there I'll make phone calls to my car insurance, GAP insurance, MBFS, Contractcars.com & MB Poole.

We've continued to drive the car this weekend. It's been OK since March. There's no point in panicking for a few extra days. ;)

Your call, wouldn't be something I would do knowing the car is not legal.
As I said previous I've no idea on the implications but it's not a chance I would be prepared to take.

Unless you got an absolute idiot of a copper then I would be highly surprised at any implications. There's been no illegal action on the part of Happytalk what so ever. A genuine mistake has been noticed & the appropriate action has been put in place to solve the issue without unnecessary costs.

If anything illegal had gone on with the plates that's on the car now, I'm sure it would catch up with Happytalk eventually once the situation had been solved.
In my opinion any sensible police officer would give you a week to solve the problem like they have done with people I know who for instance have had lights out etc.

Have you checked which registration is actually taxed. Is it the one it will be going to?

If not you need to sort that as well.

I assume that the car is taxed under the HF16 Number (the one I'm changing to) because that's the number on the V5.

I'll check it out tomorrow Stu. Cheers. :thumb:
