In the never ending quest for more power, I have decided to take my car to one of my friends who builds engines.
He has already done the cams and heads, but we are now thinking of boring the block out:devil:
Does anyone know what an E55 can be bored out to?
I know the easiest way to gain more power would be to fit a Kleeman aftermarket supercharger, but £15k is a bit too steep atm:crazy:

Boring out is one solution but I would be careful as you may get some heat problems after. I know and understand what you are trying to achieve and all credit to you. If I remember right somewhere about 5.75 to 6 ltrs. Some V8's cannot be rebored due to the type of cylinder lining.

This is what we thought.
He looked up some data in his books and came up with 2 options.
One engine can be done to 6.1 and another can't be done at all (ceramic liners)
Guess there is only one way to find out:rolleyes:
The book gave no reference to engine numbers, but simply stated the years 1997 - 1998.
My car was built in 1998 (December), but was registered in Feb 1999.
Guess I'm on the changeover year, or could that simply be pre - post facelift changes?
I did read somewhere that the original E55's were capable of nearly 1000bhp, but that would be some feat:eek: and I guess they were the AMG factory specials.

PM me your vin number and I will send you back your engine number.

Any luck on the WIS Ian?

Sorry mate been busy looking after SWMBO, not a well bunny. Will sort it for you later this evening and get my findings to you.

Do you want more power or more torque? Best route for more power (and most expensive) is to rev the engine higher. A wilder cam, remap and lifting the rev limit 700 rpm or so will help. I'd think a big increase in rev limit would cause all kinds of knock-on effects (valve train instability, overspeeding the autobox, belt drive & alternator, etc, etc)

For more torque forced induction would be best. Increased capacity is another way

What CR are you running? A set of forged pistons with cutouts for the valves might let you raise the CR without skimming the head (though I'd doubt it) but there's lots of measuring needed to get it all right. You can't increase valve lift without considering the valve-piston clearances and I'd expect them to be pretty tight on a modern engine

I think you need to plan what you want to achieve and then make all changes work to that goal. If you've done the head & cams then changing other things now may make the existing mods redundant

Personally I'd find out what the top German tuners do and then do exactly that

The old saying used to be, "There's no replacement for displacement!", but nowadays it is technology that will get the extra horses. ;) ;)

Usually a build date is at least four weeks before delivery dates, but that is going to be very flexible, holidays, problems with parts, delivery delays etc etc I would think AMG's would have a longer delivery delay simply because of the extra work?

your engine number should be on the registration document

That's what I thought, but it just has N/K

what about the plate near the front of the engine with lots of numbers?

Ian said it is underneath one of the exhaust manifolds.
He has kindly given me what should be the number, but will get him to check when we consider the new exhaust mods:devil:

Don't touch the block at all, machining it would be a mistake imo.

I have a Spaceframed MK1 Escort and I intend to fit a closed deck block 500E engine (When I can find and afford one :o ) and will be lowering the compression to about 9/1, ceramic coating the skirts, piston crowns and head chambers and then throwing as much boost at it as possible.

The bottom ends of these are built so strongly that just genuine parts used on a rebuild will provide a sound base for any improvements.

Port matching, Individual throttle bodies and a cool air feed would make a great difference. My TB doesn't even open past 45° so a set of bodies would be one hell of an upgrade.

Why?
Surely this beast is fast enough?
Any quicker and the paint will fall off,
Oh! my mistake, it will anyway!!!
