I get 34.5 on long runs with my E240 and that is using a combination of cruise control and a light right foot. It would be easy to make it go below 30 without trying very hard. I've seen as low as 23 around town and 26/27 on suburban stop start.

An E280 probably won't be much worse with a light right foot but probably has rather more capacity to get worse if you like to work it!

Also, what sort of price is about right for a 94 M reg e280 petrol auto, good condition, full leather??

£1700 is the figure that comes to mind for what you have asked for. As for Mpg. About 19 for urban and 27 on a long run . It would depend on HOW heavy your foot is. There is always the temptation to hit the "Instant horizon" button below the accelerator, that plays havoc with the mpg, but brings the biggest grin to your face possible.
