MPG Figures

Hi

What is it with mpg figures that most people always quote their best ever figure as the norm?????

My E300TD Estate managed 40 mpg once that doesnt mean it does it all the time. If i am working on a site a reasonable distance away travelling early morn and late night missing traffic and keeping well below 70 i can get the average over a few tanks around 36. If i am just going to the office across town 7 miles or so it wil be 25-30 depending on weather and also whether i am on 17 or 18 inch wheels traffic etc etc. My real life economy then is somewhere between 25 and 35 mpg.

By quoting our best figures we are getting an increasing number of new members joining who think there is something wrong with their E320 cdi or similar because it is getting low 30's in town driving???

What do they expect from a 3000-3200 cc automatic diesel???? 40?


I am not pointing this at anyone at all, that is not the intention. I just want to know why we are intent on raising peoples expectations.

I always give the figure that I have averaged over the last eight years or so.

Currently 33.23 mpg and rising..

It does make me smile when some peeps say their petrol car does 30-34 then another time give the actual average of under 26..

Quoting your best MPG is no different to quoting your cars 0-60 acceleration or top speed, your BHP or torque.
It is simply an indication of what is possible or the maximum achievable. If some people read & that and think it should manage those figures all the time, than more fool them.

But we dont get people saying that their car only does 60 in 9 secs rather that 7, or my car maxed out at 125 when it is supposed to do 140.

We are all guilty of it at times, and i am not pointing this at anyone at all.

It is totally fine if we quote our best mpg, it is why we do it that i want to know??? Is it a "Mine is better than yours thing"?? or a "look what i got" thing??

To be honest, I've never read any MPG figures & took them to mean that every example of that car will do the same MPG all the time. I'm actually surprised that anyone would even think that was the case?

when i quote my figures mpg, i always quote what i have got on a fill up, so tomorrow i will fill up, work out my mpg and i will post it, so any body can do 50 mph on dual carriage and say yeh i go 65 mpg, but really people should put what they have got between fill ups, imho

This whole thread has got me confused.
Why should everyone quote what they get between fill ups?
Everyones driving style is different so what does that prove that posting your best MPG doesn't?

I'm more surprised that anybody even cares?
