My sister is looking for a Mercedes diesel coupe automatic for ~£10k.

So I think the choice is MY2005: C-class couple 220CDi vs. CLK 220CDi

Parker's Guide gives some basic dimensional differences, but the data is quite incomplete like weight & boot size.

Performance and efficiency look similar but do they drive roughly the same too? What platforms are the two cars based upon?

Autotrader prices:
2005 C-class coupe 220CDi ~£9-10k
2005 CLK 220CDi ~£10-11k

So the CLK looks fair value in comparison I feel.

Are running/servicing costs broadly similar?

Having not sat or driven in either I'd welcome some comparisons people can make.

As ever, thanks for any words of advice.

The C class coupe and CLK are based on the 203 platform. I imagine £ for £ though the C class will have a higher spec and lower milliage than the CLK. Its also a hatchback and smaller so easier to park....

However the CLK is an altogether classier and more upmarket proposition, not only in style but in interior fitments that are more 211 than 203.

Both cars will be practical, the CLK will probably use a bit more fuel but also be more refined. She needs to test both of them.

Thanks Steve, much as I guessed.

My gut feeling was that it would be easier to find a nice spec CLK than a C-class coupe. The CLK being more expensive is more likely to have a leather interior at least?

Does anyone know which W209 came with the 6-speed auto? I suspect my sister's commute in Surrey will be in heavish traffic, so more gears might mean better economy?

No CLK220cdi came with 6sp auto. All are 5spd

I think you mean the sequi tronic 6sp robotised manual car which is a rare. Shes better with the normal 5spd torque converter auto.

You are probably right re the spec issue of the CLK, my guess if she can afford a CLK, then that is the car to get.

Another question:

Is there any variation in the build quality of the two cars, specifically the body panels? I guess being both 2005 rust will not be an issue?

Thanks

Hmmm

Would say the 209 is probably the better of the 2 cars. Dont know why, but it cost more new so in theory should be better. Both cars are galvanised.
