On the way back from london, was in a good mood as i had just met up with some friends and i was on my way back to meet my girlfriend... was driving quite 'enthusiastically' lets say, and i noticed i was being tailed by the previous shape golf. We get to the lights and i thought "Ok i'm going to show this guy he shouldn't mess with the better marque!"

We get off at the lights at exactly the same pace, which i intially found extremely strange cuz i have quite decent clutch control and i can get a great jump ahead of many drivers from standstill.

Anyway we're both booting it, and i can hear his car sound alot more muscular then i remember any golf engine being... into 3rd gear now and he's still bonnet-to-bonnet with me, no one is pulling away and we're both exactly the same... and i'm quite shocked at this point that he could even keep up (GTi's in that shape dont keep up with me)..

We get to the next set of lights and we were both alone on this 3 lane A road... he let his window down and said "DUUUUDE!!! THATS NOT EVEN AN AMG", i was like "DUUUDE... thats just a golf!", he then told me to look at the back of his car, i reversed slighty only to find...

the twin piped R32....

i moved forward again and started laughing quite nervously... and he said "isn't that just a standard 2.3 supercharged??", i told him it was. Light went green, and i had to turn left, so we both took separate routes home.

Ok R32's are in the region of 240bhp, and they must be lighter than mine ... right??

Well either way i've booked my car in with DMS next saturday to get the remap... they pledge 24bhp and 20ft lbs of torque, and included in the price is a before and after dyno.... i'm so eager to see what this 'before' dyno figure is going to be...

There will always be someone faster/bigger/better.

Whilst I am sure yours is a nice car & you have tuned it up & without trying to be patronising, many new cars will be as fast; you will probably find there are diesels( ) which could outperform it... Such is technological progress.

When one realises/accepts this, rather than being depressing, it is actually liberating as there is no need to constantly compete & money goes further!

:)

R32's are not that fast, my 200bhp Cortina used to eat them for breakfast off the lights, gearing couldbe different, tyres may not be great, driver could be pants, you could be an exceptional driver, your car may not be standard, lots of reasons why you could be quick or he could be slow, well done anyway though.

I stayed in front of a Mitsubishi Evo 7 one night and i know he was trying and i KNOW he had better handling and more power than me, i was just braver, a hell of a lot of it is down to the driver.

I retired from the traffic light grand prix some 20 years ago....I'd had a good career, a few victories, one or two embarrassments and an awful occasion when I'd completely omitted to select first gear.....

The R32 is fat and lardy.
Wasn't it when they reviewed it on TG that they said it was twice the power of the origial Mk1 GTi but twice the weight.

I bet the W202 is lighter.

Golf R32 3 door. Weight 1510 kg

C-230k Weight 1420 kg

Just looked it up, according to google they weigh over 1400kg!! My cortina was closer to 1000 so no wonder i was quicker, my W114 coupe only weighs just over 1400kg and would have had 180bhp new, i guess my ol' girl was pretty fast in her day. lol

Dunno what the official 0-60 for a 230k is, but if it's more than 8.0 you need to watch out for Vito 120 vans too ;) :D

"DUUUUDE!!! THATS NOT EVEN AN AMG", i was like "DUUUDE... thats just a golf!",

Two turtles racing each other - what are the chances of that?

Cowabunga! :D

These people racing just end up getting in my way, please stop it till the proper cars are past.

Now waiting for an E55 owner to pop up :o

You need a big difference in power to see a noticeable difference on the road.

Dave!

Thats rubbish, new cars get more powerfull thats true, but they also get much heavier, i have built lots of fast cars and you just need to use your head, the Cortina i mention was built for under £3000 and had a power to weight ratio of 200bhp per ton and lots of torque from very low down in the rev range, much better than any similar powered turbo engine as i had no need to constantly change gear.

Given that the engine i had fitted was completely standard and i know around another £1500 would have given me an extra 120 to 140bhp, i am fairly sure i could have beaten any modern car you could buy for 4 1/2 grand.

I have a 5.7 litre pontiac engine to fit into my coupe, its rated at over 300bhp and cost me 500 quid including the gearbox, once in the car i can spend far less than buying a modern car and make it go plenty fast.

Moden car drivers often dont realise how fast us modifiers can make stuff go given a bit of common sense and some knowlegable mates, you just need to forget about cone filters, decat pipes and dodgy chips and fit the biggest engine you can get in there which is how the manufacturers build most of their fast cars.

May I remind honourable members that racing on the public highway is an offence

Diesels have come on leaps and bounds, my focus is a decent drive and would keep up with 80's so called hot hatch's, but that could be deemed as racing and as you know that is illegal on public roads

Apparently the new Sprinters they have at work are extremely rapid, with a tiptronic gearbox :D :D

I SO badly want to drive one but they keep coming up with nonsense about being on CID so having no need to drive crewbuses

Spoilsports :p Although I did manage to blag a blue-light run about a year ago. I was in the area when someone called up for urgent assistance so made my way (In suit!) and found a rather angry young man who needed to be restrained in the back of a van. Unfortunately of the 3 officers present I was the only response-trained one  (Apart from the large PC in the back sitting on our friend. Which I didn't fancy :) )

So took the opportunity for a long blue-light run to the nick driving the van! :D

For some reason the V6 CDI Sprinter gets 20 bhp less than the V6 Vito (and a bit less torque). But of course yours may be 'special' :D
