Mercedes e class w211 e280 cdi saloon
Hi All,
My car is a Mercedes e class w211 2009.
Does have around 87k miles, bought this car 11 months ago.

So today I had a trip from Manchester to London,

Everything was fine until I was 30 minutes away from London, I have noticed car was not kicking down,
Then when I left motorway gear was stuck in 7th.

At First try even manual shifting was not working,

Then at second try it started working in manual, so I had to drive manually for 40 mins in London city( i hate driving in manual but didn't had a choice)

When I arrived to my destination after dropping my passenger it was completely working fine again in automatic.

Anyone have a idea what happened?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi , I bought a w211 e63 with 7g tronic a few years ago that had sticky gears ie it was getting stuck in 5th and I had to switch the car off and on to reset. I believe the issue with that car specifically was a sensor in the transmission (possibly speed sensor ) that had gone bad and it cost me 1k to get it fixed at DDR surrey

As above it's always worth pulling over and turning off & on again to see if it clears. We had a 2007 C Class with 7g Tronic that did this occasionally. To get to the bottom of it you need to have the fault codes read and interpreted by a dealer or competent independent.

An OBD reader is a must as BTB states, hopefully this will display a fault while the gear is stuck or a stored historic code even though you don't see a light on the dash
Is never happend before and no light on the dash,
Since I have bought this car I have done around 3k miles in 11 months,
I had a star scan from a Mercedes independent garage 4 months ago,
Only 2 faults came up o2 sensor, and back pressure sensor which are changed.

Came to say this, and to find out when the ATF fluid was last changed on the car?
Since I have bought this car (11 months ago) ATF fluid is not been changed,

I was planning to change by this December.

Can i check by myself?
Or any local garage would be able to check?
If you are handy the level can be checked, but I would doing some googling or watching some videos, there's plenty about, otherwise a good merc independent specialist would be able to check it for you. You basically have to get underneath the car remove the under trays and with the engine running and at a predetermined transmission temperature remove the sump oil drain plug if you get a steady trickle it's ok, if it absolutely pours out it's overfilled and if nothing comes out it's underfilled. That's my understanding if I've not described correctly maybe someone could correct.

Please make sure you remove the filler plug and not the drainage plug.

That said, on my 2011/12 R172 SLK250, there is only a "drain" plug requiring a special adapter to fill and drain the sump via this plug.

Same for his gearbox , just the one fill/drain plug .

Curious to find out if anyone know where to buy the fill adapter for this little contraption?
This was my thread of my gearbox ATF change from another forum .
There are some pics of how I made up a cheap pump for getting the ATF in there .

Even if the ATF level is correct, it may be that it's well past needing to be changed. After 15 years and 87k miles that oil has had to do a lot of work. If you don't know when it was last changed, it's well worth getting it done. replacing the ATF now is a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing the gearbox at some unknown point in the future.
