My CLS55 AMG

Oooo I like the sound and your review... Tempting me to do it on the E55.

Will it still pass MOT and will I get any droning sound in the cabin (at motorway speeds)?

Bear in mind this won't be as successful with the E55 as the CLS has a significantly louder exhaust from the factory.

Arrived today, only bought them yesterday afternoon :)

Hella LED DRL, which I intend to fit into fog light surrounds.
Being Hella, quality is superb (OEM wiring and connectors).

I've looked at those a few times with the same idea in mind :)

same here l thought about it, had a set lying around so placed them up in the fog surrounds, just looked too aftermarket and stuck on so scrapped that idea.

Test fitted in the foglight surround tonight, perfect fit as they are identical size. - not sure how they look stuck on Alps? Have you get the same set?

Will need to fabricate the brackets to secure them in place.

Tricky bit will be isolating the sidelight wire in the main headlight loom. Any ideas?

You could bond them on to the blanking plate with JB Weld from the rear.

Switch the sidelights on and use a probe to detect the correct wire?

Prolly grey/black or grey/red.

Will you need Star to do this? Even swapping to an incorrect bulb type can cause a canbus fault.

As I understand it, the usual way to wire in DRLs is you use the sidelight feed to trigger the the lights and you get the actual power direct from the fusebox. Therefore no canbus problems.

Karl may be looking at a different route though obviously.

You use an ignition feed to supply the drls.
You also need a sidelight feed to trigger them to dim with sidelights and headlights.
You also need to defeat the foglight bulb failure detection.
Karl has already asked if this can be done by star as this is the neatest and best way.
In my case I left the foglight bulbs in circuit and relocated them behind the grille. This meant that the bulb failure isn't triggered.

Owned the car for a year as of today :D

So, battled the rain/very fast wind today and had a go at fitting the DRLs, as per all mods nothing is straightforward.

Removed existing foglight (with fitted Xenon bulb by previous owner), side by side you can see they are virtually the same size except the existing unit has the frame attached which is used to connect to the bumper:

DRL on the left, old fog on the right.

Armed with my trusty Dremel I remove the frame from the foglight and drilled a couple of holes into it, then used the screws from the foglight to attach it to the DRL:

Then fitted it back onto the car, its 95% perfect fit apart from the top section of the grill doesnt sit flush anymore and dips down slightly, so I will need to do some more fettling:

Looks OEM wouldnt you say?:

Its going to be a wheel off/remove wheel arch lining to get it sitting flush I think, I also need to make all the foglight wiring loom watertight (bag it up?) behind the bumper.

Wont start with the actual DRL wiring until both units are installed.

Im enjoying working on a 'proper' mod again, havent really had much to do since I got the car :thumb:

Just fitted the 2nd one before the rain started tonight.

Goto remove both wheels to tidy up old wiring & to position new wiring yet.

Gonna be a couple of days before the big switch on!

As the DRLs are such a large mod, I thought it deserved its own thread. A kind of 'HOW TO' detailed post HERE

Any ideas what's next? :D

Clue, its not a new steering wheel
