My other car is.....

Actually tomorrow my other other car will be my bike - a 2013 Trek Cobia 29er. I will be commuting the 9-odd miles from my home in NE London to the City office near Liverpool Street. And back. Hopefully.

Jesus saves,

But, my life, Moses knew how to invest.

(With apologies to Kevin Keegan)

Brave man to be doing it at this time of the year. Mine are tucked away until the Spring.

Excellent !!

I guess you'd need a LeMans Racer for

"But Keegan scores on the rebound."

This is nothing. I do it year round. As they say where I come from "There's no such thing as bad weather. You're just wearing the wrong clothes".

The cold I can deal with but it’s riding in the dark that I’m uncomfortable with. A lot of my route is the Edgware road from Colindale all the way through to Kilburn.

I don't mind the dark when it's dry and clear as I have some pretty bright lights and (think) I can generally be seen.

When it's dark and raining it's a different story as it's much harder for motorists to make out bikes.

Then I just go slowly. Which is really dull.

I know I do motorcycling and motorsport, but cycling in London is beyond my bravery threshold:confused:
My nephew works in the smoke for Rapha and is a daily rider on his company (6kg!)bike.
He even popped up to see us on it...206 miles and 13hrs taking in the Dales to add a bit of elevation...

Small world. One of the Dads from school works for Rafa. Meanwhile I just arrived to be called from the school. My boys been sent home. Back I go......

The essence of safe urban cycling: Don't race and expect everyone else to be an idiot.

There are better places (and hills) for proper cardio and exhilaration.

This is one of the main reasons I ride a mountain bike. It's heavy and on fat slicks and takes a lot of effort to get to vmax which is only about 25mph. My commute is series of sprints from one red light to the next. Great exercise. And it's got hydraulic discs which are fabulous for year-round cummuting

This. 1000%

I've always loved cycling through cities. It's a buzz. Plus I get to slot some "free" exercise into my day. Win win.

Interestingly, again, my last bike, like yours, was a carbon Gary Fisher 29er.

"It had to go" when I got rid of the Estate and had to resort to a roof rack.

Great bike for city tarmac but slow in country and town because of those wheels.

As Mr Clarkson says, there is no perfect all round car (or bike), we just need a selection for different purposes

A better way of exercising that sitting on a tube train, but "history is told by the survivors."

  1. Stop it!! Only the other day I was drooling over a carbon Cube in the traffic. I'd completely forgotten until now. This is exactly N+1 happens.

    Rule 12: N= N+1 where N>2 and N=S-1
NB: lightly used Cube Carbon hardtails can be bought for £700+ at this time of the year
