Need help on a fault code and persistant Engine Management light

Thats a reasonable time.

I am sorry that I worried you.

Those rubber hoses normally cause running faults such as hunting at idle and other stuff too.

You had no effects at all. Thats why I did not suggest it.

We all learn all of the time!!!!

Looks like GlenSmith and in particular tech123 were spot on.

Just shows though most main dealers can beat most indies in a straight fight.

Its because they see so many of the same car and the same faults.

I am very lucky to have acess to most of this information. I will be at the local MB works party friday night all paid for too.:bannana:

Of course..

I didn't mean you....You would have got that one if you had seen the car.

I deliberatley said Most..!!;)

We do seem to be getting threads where the inde doesn't sus a problem and the dealer does straight away.

On the later cars I would agree.

I have just sent a car to MB to get fixed because I could not get to the bottom of the problem.

They phoned me yesterday and I picked up the car. I drove 30 seconds up the road and it was still, the same. (£900 bill)

I did not have the time to look at any real depth into the probelm myself so thats why I gave it to MB.

I had a phne call from the cheif there to discuss the problem withthe car and I came to the conclusion they were going to bolt stuff to it until it was fixed.

Final bill was £355. It is now fixed.

If I had listeded to my gut feeling about the cure in the first place I would have found the problem but I doubted myself.

I have had another lesson today.

Had a good test drive then..

There are always faults that seem illogical, that's when a store of parts is useful.

As a matter of interest do you ever get any of the dealers overspill work.?

They point blank won't do it. The service manager there is on VERY thin ice with me anyway. He couldn't manage a W***. He was VERY rude to Emma the other day and made me boil.

They don't have enough work as it is.

They run out of work at midday at least twice a week. Its a combination of poor workshop management and not enough work.

I would love to think its because of me opening up but I doubt it

They hire my ramp!

BlackC55 clear your PM box..

..

Cheers...

No apology needed, wasn't unduly worried as if the work was needed Ian Walkers nearby:D

I agree with all the comments esp about later models being better at a dealer. The indie I went to have a good reputation but mostly deal with older models, W124, W169, SL pagodas and the 80's model. With later models they rely on bulletins and advice from mercedes which isn't always forthcoming,

What I would rather have seen though was the indie mechanics looking over the car (10min job) after plugging the machine in rather than just shaking their heads and saying 'its the MAS mate'. No brains were engaged and that annoys me.

Interestingly though, the Dealers diagnosis was slightly more detailed than the indie's. The indies just came up that P code Self adaption, rich on part throttle etc. The dealers came up with another code hat was ongoing and not stored? that the indie was missing to the effect that on occasion the engine ran lean which would have highlighted an intake leak! I suppose on ocassion, Ollie and Ian B W an exception, you get what you pays at an indie.

On conclusion for servicing matters and known faults an indie would be the way to go, for complicated issues that require a) vehicle experience b) Mercedes central backup c) proper star sometimes a dealer may be the only option.

There is also the point that a good service manager will get the best out of the workshop boys, often an indie see's the bottom line (cash) and is not prepared to go the whole hog.

Again, I appreciate all the support, responses and comments.

Cheers
