Hi gang ,

Managed to spill a glass of OJ into the laptop yesterday !! :o

Been onto my insurers , who are sending me vouchers to the tune of £379 , however , they have to be spent in PC World or Currys.

Now , i haven't bought a laptop for 4 years , so any advice would be great.

The vouchers can't be spent online, so forget the online deals.

My old lappy had a 15.4 inch widescreen , so i don't want to go smaller than that , but i'm looking at the specs and getting a bit confused.

I won't be sending rockets to Pluto , just surfing the net , bit of word processing , that sort of stuff. No video editing or anything ...

I don't mind adding a bit to the vouchers , but not too much ( not more than £50 ) ...

Any advice gratefully received , as always

H

Acer 5920 is a good budget laptop.

My advice in future is to always connect an external keyboard, mouse and monitor to laptops when static and keep the lappy away and out of harms way so as to negate the possibility of damage from spillages in future.

You may in fact be able to benifit from any PCWorld internet deals as I'm pretty sure they offer the "collect in store" deal however you pay? Gotta be worth looking at 'methinks!

IMHO there are a Sony and a Toshiba on there that look good value (I'd stay away from Advent). Speaking from a support angle I know it can be difficult to get Sony spares etc. sometimes

Cheers guys , keep em coming ...

I've not heard of Acer or Advent .... are they 'own brand' ?

I've been looking at the Dells, that's one of the reasons i am confused ! :o

I'd seen that Tosh , but my isurance company said i can get a Toshiba Equius L350D-11D from Currys for £379 , and yet i can't find it !!

Windows Vista and modern applications are memory hungry, so you'll need at least 2 GB of RAM in my opinion.

Intel Dual Core are the current processor market leaders at the moment I am led to believe, so avoid the AMD and low spec Intel Celerons.

As far as I am aware Advent is an "own brand" Acer are actually one of the largest manufacturers in the world....

Or you could add a wedge to your voucher and buy an Apple.....

Now are you confused...............???

I recently had an insurance claim for my laptop, they sent me a prepaid Visa card that could be spent on line. It was restricted to certain stores though.

I managed to pick up a very good Compaq on special offer (£100 off) for £399 from Currys.

I got a laptop this week from pcworld. Its the Samsung R510 , I got it to replace my existing pc thats getting past it now. Really good speed Dual core 2.0ghz and 4gb RAM intergrated wireless and bluetooth and HDMI output for £500. Im really happy with it. Nice glossy looking piece of kit too!

It's a hundred pounds more than i want to spend . :)

1) Buy a pack of pencils and an A4 pad from Staples
2) Spend remainder on wine, loose women and song
3) Wear big grin :D

:bannana: :bannana:

P.S. We won't tell Angela, honest

But he wont be able to talk to you ...................unless he sends u letters

Or if you feel vouchers disadvantage you.....

....have a read of this http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/ombudsman-news/10/oct-repair-replace-cash.htm

You need to read your policy first under "how we settle your claim" or similar to see if it states vouchers (in which case its part of your contract).

So, if using vouchers gets you less (i.e. no web discount and/or store manager will not negotiate as he's already given the insurer a discount on the vouchers...) then ask politely for cash instead.

Last lappy MrsIA2 managed to "juice", I put a new keyboard on. Works fine.

From my mixed bag computer ****nal my Toshiba lap top has been extremely reliable, 5 years and I can't remember the last crash. Bought from PC world to replace a stolen Dell.

Also, as mentioned do get 2mb Ram, I have 1gb on my Viao and it can be a bit slow just doing basic stuff with Vista.

If you get A laptop with Vista Buisness, you can legally downgrade it too XP

But do stay away from brands you havent heard off, oh and Stay away from Advent (Crap) / Sony (Spares Impossible) / Medion (Sames as Advent & Sony)

Ok Brands
Acer / Tosh / Fujitsu / Lenovo / Dell & Samsung in same Breath IMHO

agree with jpskiller.

I'd add hp/compaq to the list of ones to stay away from though also.

Howard why not put a poll on computer brands .. I vote for samsung...love my X11

Now sits back and waits for it to break.......

You're not in such a bad position Howard.

Having recently evluated, I found PC World competetive on laptops and for the money you should get something reasonable with a 15" screen.

On laptops, PC world prices also seem mostly the same in-store as online.

For the money, not wanting to add much, I'd probably go Dell 1525.
