Which laptop for £400

EDIT :- the 'low cost' memory upgrade is £45 for an extra 256 , totalling 512 ...... i would go down the crucial route, but it will invalidate the warranty if i open it up , surely its better to have it factory installed ?
Most laptops only have two memory slots. If you buy one with 256 and put in another 256, when you want to upgrade again to 1Gb (and believe me you will want to) you will need to throw away the two 256's and put in new ones.

Much better off buying a machine with a single 512 or 1Gb So-Dimm.

Remember to spend the money on the NON upgradable parts. Memory can be added at any time, a better graphics card or CPU cannot.

I don't apply the same rules when buying a laptop as I would a desktop. My desktop is the best I can afford whereas my laptop is the cheapest that will do the job.

My most recent laptop is an Acer, have to say it does the job, I went for the extra RAM (1GB) I have no complaints. It will eventually end up abused, dropped, kicked and scratched like all the others and its life will probably end up with one of my kids or nephews/nieces for it's final chapter of abuse.

Computers (and components) are the easiest things in the world to spend money on, but its worth bearing in mind what you need it for, my PDA nearly ticks all the boxes in terms of mobile surfing and emailing, all I really need is someone to come up with a foldaway 15" screen!

Gang,

Some advice please ...

I have £350 - 400 tops to spend on a laptop..... its only really going to get used for surfing the net , putting photos on and general letter writing and such...

I don't play games, download DVD's or anything so it's not going to be taxed, but obviously i want to get the best one i can though ;)

So, its down to these two bad boys , before anyone says, i know they are not the best machines in the overall scheme of things , but i'm not going to be sending rockets to pluto , and plus, its all i can afford .... :o

Basically , which one would you go for bearing in mind my needs , please remember my technical knowledge is limited to rewiring a plug , so go easy on me ...... ;)

Went for the Fuji in the end ..... :bannana: and upped the RAM to 512mb

Hope its good !

for me, one of the most important things is battery life when all other things are similar, its hard to upgrade with batteries

Yes i noticed that , the Fuji has up to 5 hours battery , the Acer 2.5 ...
