As i was driving through the very wet german countryside today, i passed a scrapyard which seemed to have alot of W124's in variuos states of undress. So i had a bright idea to see if they had one for mine, to replace my rust ridden one, to my surprise they did! And only cost me about £40.

I may have been slightly hasty, as the trouble is, i haven't got a clue how to get the old one off, including all the trim, and replace it with the new one. :o

Has anyone done this before, and is it easy enough for someone who is quite cack handed?

Ta.

Where the hinge arms attach to the lid pressing there are moulded plastic covers. lever them off- they clip on- to expose the securing bolt heads. disconnect the wires leading to number plate lights and remove from the lid. undo the screws remove the lid Replacement is the opposite. replace the mounting screws lightly to allow you to align the lid before tightening up.

Cheers for that, sounds like something i could do.

what about the carpet type lining on the boot lid, is that easy to replace?

It's all fairly straightforward and quite logical. The carpet is held on with the aforementioned white plastic expanding rivets and there are at least 20! You'll need to buy some as you will break some. Once the carpet is off you can start removing the wiring for the number plate light, again very straightforward. Then you can remove the bootlid completely, undo the 2 bolts on each side that bolt to the lifters (the boot will stay where it is even without the bolts due to a locating lug on each side!) you can then carefully lift the bootlid off and do the reverse for refitting. It might be a good idea to place some cardboard over the rear window. This link will help with removal, refitting and getting the fit just right.
