Hi All

Want to spray some new/replacement bumper inserts on a 124.

2 questions really: will one can of primer and colour do the trick? secondly how do i get the right colour. Car is the Dornite blackberry but the insert is a slightly different shade - how do i determine that shade so i order the right stuff?

Yes; for those of you who now we have got Hannz old 280t. A trip to 124 works at the weekend (so I get to play with the spanners!!) to change all the fluids and have a general chin wag with Ian

cheers

Give the VIN to the parts person and he will be able to look up the paint code.

Have you priced up the inserts yet - wondered what the cost of new inserts are.

I guess it's for the estate.

thanks KTH,

yes, it is for the estate. Have not priced up the inserts but read here they are about £61+VAT. May try to find them at a scrappy.

A thought has occurred to me. is it the same colour; just looks different shade as its on plastic not metal?? Hopefully someone will put me right on that point.

oh yes, they are the bumpers with the insert that wraps half way round, not all the way to the wheel arch like my coupe.

As you say the inserts are about £60 each from a dealer. You have to break the old one off to remove it

You can paint the bumper insert before fitting or paint the whole bumper in one go. If the car is Bornite I don't know if the bumper is the same shade as the car or not - on some colours it is but on most it's not

Paint for the bumpers should be mixed with a matting agent to get the non-gloss finish that the kit normally has. If you buy the aerosol from Mercedes I'd imagine the finish would be correct but there's no guarantee that the rest of the bumper will be as most cars have had the bumper painted at least once

The giveaway at the rear is to see the trim strip on the tailgate, the bumper and the kit on the side where they all meet. Quite often they're three different shades

Thanks Nick.

I guess if i do both front and rear inserts (detached from the main bumper section) at the same time I should be OK insomuch as they will both match. its a non-urgent job so I may well wait until its warm again; if only to help the paint harden.

Alternatiely I should have come to you for an immaculate one;)

Matt

p.s. will be PM'ing you on another subject

thanks for that Del320

I know what Nick means (i think:) ). in the Brooklands maintenance book it mentions drilling out some rivets to get the insert away from the main bumper section. Did you have to do this on yours by any chance?

when i get round to this job (defo when it's warmer - i am a candy a**e:rolleyes: ) i may well be in touch

cheers

Bornite paint code is 481u. Bumper will probably be a different colour--lighter??

Cheers Grober

the more i look at it the more i think its one colour all over and its the matting agent/background that is giving a slightly different effect.

I think i will take bumper off; spray bumper and the new inserts at the same time (but not whilst attached together). this goes for front and rear so there is some 'match'.

of course, i will then discover the middle plastic panels need a re-spray:rolleyes:

there's a listing here for some of the Mercedes "two-tone" combinations. Unfortunately Bornite isn't one of them. :( Don't know if it was a USA colour? http://www.paintscratch.com/
