new shell unleaded

So if it's plug contamination how come it hasn't affected every single car that has used it (probably hundreds of thousands by now)? And don't you think that might have occurred to them as a potential issue?

It most likely does not on most cars but use of UCL is a known problem although usually only if too much is used.

My guess would be might be just enough to tip a dirty or badly adjusted plug in some engines beyond a critical point.

Also a further guess as to why the experience might vary a little bit:

Q3. What is the ethanol content of the Shell Fuel Save regular fuel you advertise?

Reply: The British Standard for Gasoline Fuels allows up to 5% Ethanol. Due to the requirements of the RTFO (Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation) which requires us to aggregate 5% of biocomponent in our fuels, the level will be between 0% and 5% depending on the source and will vary.

Shell Fuel Save - a new petrol, NEWS on the V8 Website, V8 Register, MG Car Club

Now it is a long time since I last looked into this, but IIRC stuffing Ethanol into fuel increases the Octane rating (hurrah!) but lowers the overall calorific value (boo!). But no doubt it is "green"

i have filled up with 2 tanks of sainsburys fuel since suspecting it could be shell and the hunting has cleared up.

I used the fuelsave stuff and the eml light came on in my Vectra which threw up the o2 sensor fauklt code. I really don't know if it was related. Could just be a coincidence!

Switched the Volvo diesel from Shell to Total this weekend dramatic improvement instantly engine quietened down is not as coarse and the drive is much smoother

Although Shell Fuelsave looks OK on our 2 petrol cars it definitely does not suit the Volvo which is strange as it has spent all its life running on shell, but not anymore. Even with Millers the new Shell stuff appears to be pants in the Volvo.

Total suits it fine but that going to be another problem as Total are pulling out of the UK and their petrol stations are up for sale likely to be bought by GazProm of Russia.

Just a couple of points, Duty on Formula Shell was the same as non Formula Shell. Additives have never been added to the base product anywhere except the Distribution Terminal, and in the case of Formula Shell by automated injection, so it would have been impossible for Drivers to overdose.

Exactly the same in my E280cdi, no more fuelsave in mine, but i'm using v-power all the time now and it's a vast improvement, NOT snake oil, it really does improve the running.

When it comes to diesel I use anything I can get, except the red stuff. Never noticed any difference between the various makes.

I usually use V power too but don't know if you are experiencing the same but since the introduction of fuelsave the differential to V Power has increased dramatically

Pre fuelsave, V power was 6p -7p per litre more expensive, now the differential is nearly double and it's minium 10p more expensive which makes justifying using it very difficult over standard and Millers, but the new fuelsave Millers is terrible so I have no alternative to swtich brand

Last night our local Shell station had Fuelsave diesel at 115.9 but V power was 125.9p per litre

What brand do I use now my local options are

Total
Jet
Tesco

Still a straight 7p extra around these parts

Had a quick look through this thread.
This had been something on my mind also.
I found my e220 seems lumpy at low revs and on tickover.
Had put it down to running car into reserve and dragging crap from bottom of tank through system.
However I had started using new fuel save stuff around same time as issues started.

Could be something in this.

Try a couple of tanks of V-power and see the difference:bannana:

I've had no issues with the new petrol or diesel "saver" fuels in any of my cars, although the Merc's yet to have a full tank of it... I'll try to pay closer attention.

i use fuelsave on the almera and it has no reduced effects, only use v power on the 190e so couldnt say if it affected that.

Filled up with it on Friday, engine management light came on right away, went out a day later? Never had a problem with Shell before but will not use it again!

Same here, always used shell and been very happy with it, the fuelsave was ok for the first tank, it was the 3rd and 4th it started running rough. I'm only using V-power now, for the extra 3 or 4 quid a tank its keeping everything clean hopefully:rock:

Has v-power been changed in anyway or is it still the original stuff(ie not fuelsave v-power)

I think the fuel save technology derived from v power as the blurb was pretty much the same as the v power one I read 3 year ago all be it less refined i guess

Now switched to BP.
I don't care if they flood the seas due to foreign incompetence.
Or that the local station prop up the price by an extra 15p.
All I know is since switching. My engine has not missed a beat.
Mysterious misfire gone!
