Next step up, power wise?

Unless you plan to come to track and play with your potential new to you, new car, just buy a bog standard 55 if u can find one with FSH, absolutely no point in modding an already very fast 55 for any other reason. you will never use the OEM power on the road long term without losing your license. Just makes me laugh to those that mod their 55.s and never bring it to track, whats the point, use it on road, raises the insurance, raises the chance of lost license if such individuals are inclined to test their so called big gain cars, such a waste of car and money. This said, come to the track... then it may might be worth it, potentially lots of fun to be had, although this car will need to run in its own group at santa or Vmax now, the new modded 55TTs have amazing power, brings me back to, buy standard and enjoy the road experience, it is a great car.

Disagree a little bit.....

Just about every car I’ve had I’ve wanted to improve some aspect of its performance capability. It’s not always about being able to use it on the road, as in my case it’s about pushing beyond the boundaries of what manufacturers set and getting the personal sense of satisfaction and achievement once done.

I do occasionally visit events like VMax and Santa Pod, in which case any enhancements can then be seen. But I would never want to track a big Merc, as the size, weight and OEM set up for chassis and brakes is not effective. If someone else does then good for them, especially if they upgrade brakes and handling capability and get a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment from doing it.

But for me adding performance enhancements is for the sense of achievement in pushing boundaries and releasing untapped potential.........and trust me you can feel and experience the difference even on public roads and staying within the laws of the land.....

I disagree with your disagreement Jules:)

I am not going to get into a debate about this subject, it will go on forever, but appreciate your comments, which your duly entitled too. Look forward to seeing you at Vmax to further discuss over a cup of tea and a burger!

Absolutely, will be at the September VMax.

I don’t have a horse in this race but I’ll make a couple of points:

- Radiators are rated for flow. If you increase the air flow to your engine, you have to increase the cooling surface area. There’s no two ways about it.

- Any engine is a glorified air pump. The boundaries as such are predefined by its design. All we can try and do is derestrict the air flow to and from it but we cannot change the amount of air it will take without increasing the capacity.

- Vmax is an ultimate test for a modded car. Everything else belongs in the pub. Roll on September.

Regarding MSL, I was there Friday having some work and that are surely trading !

Dropped my car off Saturday and met Acid, so I can definitely second that :)

My next car will be a CLS55 or maybe even an E55.

What would be the next step up power wise and what sort of cost is involved?
My cls 55 amg was standard when bought. I went to eurocharged at the time and got it remapped, upgraded pulley, primary decat (still passes mot with secondary cats in place) and resonator delete. Now producing 553bhp and 660 torque with an incredible amg sound.

I thought I'd do a quick update on here.

Well 3 weeks or so of owning one and what an awesome car. I'd never been able to drive /or be in on one for that matter driven in anger but wow, they go well don't they :D It handles well with brakes that stop very well. Maybe in time I might think about going for a little bit more power but like plenty of you have said, it has enough standard. The odd thing is there's not that much difference to how I remember my previous CLS500 (5.0 version) on fuel (maybe just a few miles and that's it) but the performance is so MUCH BETTER  I should have bit the bullet and bought one years ago.

I'm not even sure if I want to remove the secondary cats' either as it sings very nice standard. Although as some stage I'm sure I'll come across another 55 with it done to decide for sure. Thanks for putting up with my predictable question with your own individual answers and happy AMG'ing  :D
