Nice looking 190 Cosworth

Right, where do we start:

It's a decent colour 2.5-16 with full leather, heated seats and an automatic transmission with cruise. And it's got air con, but you'd need to check that carefully to see if it's still working after the best part of 20 years!

Anyway, looks like someone's pride and joy. Wheels, exhaust, steering wheel and indicators/side repeaters are non-original. He says it's been lowered as well, that is one thing that you'd have to check properly as they have SLS (hydraulic self-levelling suspension) on the rear. Although I am slightly biased, originality is probably more desirable on these cars these days - if you want the newer looks and style a C36/C43 makes much more sense IMO.

Condition looks quite good in the photos (don't they all though ;) ) and he's keen to show he's been looking after it, so not a bad start. To be honest though, the main problem with these cars as they get older is the fiddly bits. The parts that many garages don't know about or don't understand/ignore. Valve clearances, the ASD and SLS systems etc. Head gaskets themselves aren't a particular weak spot at all I would say, but more so the problems relating to lack of proper servicing will be valve/compression etc issues.

2.5-16s have the later duplex chain system which was a major trouble spot in the earlier 2.3 models.

You're going to want to check for rust as well at this age although to be fair it'll no doubt be better than many 8-10 year old MBs! :bannana:

If you're going to look at the car Shaun, and want to ask any questions, PM me and I'll send you my mobile number.

HTH,

Will

Excellent Will. Thanks for your help. I have just been doing a search and reading through many of your other posts relating to the 190 and also watching Wheeler Dealers on youtube.

I wouldn't rely too heavily on the WD thing for expert Cossie advice.

HAHA. :D

No, but its better than anything on TV at the minute

Think it may have been you who posted the link actually where I found it.......

He used to have a C43 estate :)

Looks very nice & nearly mint. Question is could you live with a car that old/dated?

Designed and built like the Mercs of old before the Daimler /Chrysler bean counters got their hands on the company with hardly a computer/ECU in sight save for the engine and ABS units and a CANBUS free zone. I rest my case.

They are still have very dated interiors though!

Please explain the difference between 'dated' and 'classic'?

I think you're missing the point, if you want a modern car you'd go and buy one - you can pick up a W203 for the price of a good 190E 2.5-16. :)

Shaun has owned a C43, and has been Looking at A W210 and now a previous shaped 5 series.

I can tell your very biased towards the 190e's but compared to the cars above they are dated. Dont get me wrong I like them, but theres no way I would class them as Classic... yet!

They where classed as "Classic" in the Mercedes Enthusiast.

Yep, I've owned two W202 C-classes as well, I don't class the cars as 'dated' though - that makes it sound like a bad thing, which they are not.

The fact the cars appear to be older in design is because they are, and that's what people like about them. You don't buy one because you want a new car - which I've already mentioned on my first post. If you want a new car then buy one, and if you like the W202 style, buy one - a C36 or C43 with comparible miles will probably be similarly priced or cheaper now anyway.

I think Shaun can make his mind up as to whether he like the design of the car or not?

BTW, I'm not sure you're right about the classic status - the W201 celebrates it's 25th birthday this year and MB World have been proudly displaying a 190E 2.5-16 in their museum for some time now.

I personally would class the car as a 'classic'. That is what I like about it. Also for what its worth I was looking on Lancaster classic insurance for quotes.

It seems a strange decision of car choice but at the minute it is between the 540I and 190E 2.5-16. Making that choice harder as in no way can you compare the two.

One is a practical everyday car with a beast of an engine and the second... Well its a classic. hmmmm

when think the car is 25 years old, and it still looks contemporary today .. it's a real achievement

the 190 is one of many all time great Mercedes designs

Going to give this a miss. I would only want to use it as a weekend car and really can't give it the home it requires :(

I was thinking about the 190E on the way to work. If I were going to buy it I'd probably end up spending a small fortune getting it back to a standard condition. Also I wouldn't want to pay anymore than £4k for it. If the wheels on it at the moment are genuine then I guess you'd get a small return on those and the steering wheel (if its a Momo) would be worth a few quid but that car could be a money trap.

What 540i are you looking at, E34 or E39?

This is what I picked up from Ebay for £3800 and although its mechanically A1 and fully loaded it still needs the wheels refurbed and the bonnet resprayed due to stone chips. If only Mercedes offered something as powerful for the money.
