Nightmare for two weeks in 2012

They want to close the river at Dorney Lake ( Eton ) for two weeks while the rowing events are in situ.

Will cause chaos if allowed to go ahead.

Come on guys, this event hasn't been hosted here for ages. Of course there is going to be a bit of disruption but don't you think thats a small price to pay?

I wonder if you would be saying the same if it was the world cup?

I for one am glad it's going to be here and looking forward to taking my son to some of the events:)

Quite agree. Plenty of alternative ways of getting around, and having put up with the replacement of the water and gas mains for the last 5 years, 4 weeks in the summer when most people are away is nothing.

A bit of disruption is a small price to pay.

£9.3 BILLION (and counting) isn't.

Guess when I'll be booking my holidays in 2012 :D Unless they make rallying, drag racing or saloon car racing an Olympic sport :D

agreed - it's a disgrace that we even bid to host it - it isn't worth the money, or the disruption and being in london, less than half the country will even bother to try and get tickets.

I only hope that you londoners that wanted it get to pick up the tab for it all but sadly i doubt that.

I couldn't agree more. Complete waste of time and money.

I have no interest in the olympics either.

I care not how high someone can jump or how far they can throw a ball, I really couldnt give a fig.

I will try and make sure I am on a beach somewhere for the duration so I can avoid the chaos and not have it forced upon me via the media.

Oh and Londoners didnt want it either but it IS londoners that are paying for it.

In any case London isn't the only place where the events will be, they are dotted around all over. You need to look at the bigger picture, think of the revenue it will bring to local businesses, hotels, restaurants etc etc etc, god knows we need it...

Is Atlanta not still paying off its debt from when it hosted the olympics ?

Thought it more or less bankrupted the city.

Complete waste of money .

Like many other sports facilities, the National Watersports Centre in the Midlands had it's funding cut by Sport England as money was diverted into the all-important 2012 Olympics. Facilities and businesses ouside of London and the Home Counties would have liked to share in the gravy train too few of them will.

A circus that was costed at £2.4 billion when the bid was accepted is now in line to cost £9.3 billion and there are still 2 more years for this to hit the £12 billion that many are predicting.

There could still be a possibility it could be cancelled due to the shortage of fund to finish building it.:D:bannana:

Very strong possibility the coalation wants it cancel.

Boris, Coe and company were there this week as I saw in the extended lunchtime BBC news just a 100 metre sprint lane completed.:p

It a lottery, LA and Sydney made money from it.

Johannesburg did not but FA did recently.

oh come on people, have a bit of spirit... whats a slight bit of disruption for a couple of weeks??

for the spectacle of the games being held in london.... surely thats worth the traffic?

nah i'm just kidding... it's a joke but i live in Newcastle so i couldn't care less... :D

I live on the Isle of Dogs and work in Canning Town.
I expect to attend the opening ceremony and then bog off on holiday.

A LOT of the money for this is coming from government coffers, which means that we are all paying for it one way or another.

If the government want to cut the deficit quickly, they could just cut the funding to this. It will not make us money - people who come for the olympics don't stay beyond it, and more will be put off coming as tourists while they are on as they won't want to get caught up in them.

Afterwards we will be left with facilities which will be worth nothing like what was paid out to build them and they will probably be sold on for £1 like so many of the schemes end up doing.

And the disruption this will cause to the London area will just be massive. I spend a lot of time in London and spend a lot of money there while I do, but I won't go anywhere near the olympics and my money will be spent elsewhere.

Last time i was in east london i got robbed , have things changed then ?

^^^ Not really - the difference is that now you don't even have to go to east London to get robbed by it!
