No excuse, a speeding ticket after 15 years.

LOL.....yep....I had a argument with a man when visiting a friends house in Portsmouth. I parking outside his house and he came rushing out to say that I could not park there...I asked why and he said he had a friend coming. I told him that he would have to park somewhere else then as Id beaten him to this particular space. He got pretty annoyed about that telling me that I cant just park outside someone's house! Just told him that as the car is taxed, insured and MOTed I'll park it where I want and that he did not own the road outside his house. I was unsure which way it would go to be honest....but he just walked back into his house. It was quite a nice area too....unlike lots of Pompey!!
I don't like it when people park outside mine either TBH .....but I'd never go and ask them not to!! Just annoys me when they are visiting a neighbour and they ignore the spaces outside their house and park in front of mine!!! Which they technically should not do anyway as my house is opposite a T junction!

I've had that when working as I visited clients in the borough I worked with in and another that had some our the residents of our borough living there.
The few times I've had that said to me was always on a council estate. The most recent ex (i left work 8+ yrs ago) was, must have been around 2016 about 5/6 months I got my current car/gle . As I very carefully parked up, a woman, a lot older than me came out as I was about to walk away from my car and said "you ca't park her as my son parks here." I looked around and thought WTF and said (politely)I can park here as there are no restrictions but I will move my car. I did move the car about 10 houses down, there was plenty of parking and no houses had OSP. Best to avoid cloens or a keyed car. (my car was actually keyed when it wa about 24 weeks old IIRC

Another member of staff was blocked in by residents of a council property when she parked legally in front of their rented place, as the people/clowns did not have/pay for a dropped kerb, but I guess wanted to park on the grass/concrete in front of the rented place. They made her cry and she cried all the way to the office and cried in the office. These types of clowns can be scary.

I've always parked very carefully and avoid clowns that don't pay for dropped kerbs but park on the grass/concrete/etc in front of their house.

My motto is never mess with shit as you too will get covered in shit. (yes, there will be times when residents make a reasonable request, EG, expecting skip/removals etc that is fair enough) You also leave you car and yourself open to abuse or worse.

It's often a severe case of jealously and some of my clients were like that when they say my car - i often parked away from a clients home for two reasons, - first was jealosuly and the second was, if i had to leave in a hurry as some of them were what many describe as free-loading, workshy nasty thugs who may go off the rails when things don't meet their demands

True....but I was in the works 2010 Ranger....it would be hard to spot any new damage!!

I had a screw put through a tyre once - I believe it had been wedged up against the tyre so it got driven in as I moved forward. I had no idea until I got home and found it was completely flat. No proof of anything of course, and it 'could' have happened anywhere on the way back. Thinking back I did notice a slight lurch as I drove off, which would have been it going in.

100%

In my case I went to a railway station and found the (pay & display) car park there was completely full. So I went to a nearby residential road instead and parked carefully where I wasn't obstructing any drives or off road parking. Nobody said anything at the time, but I still ended up with a punctured tyre. From their POV I can understand that having 'outsiders' parking in your road isn't great, but it's presumably a fact of life if you buy a house near a railway station. I guess you can apply to get parking restrictions (CPZ or similar), but that can be a pain when you have visitors.

They effectively do [own the parking space] if they have a driveway.
Not that that stops others parking there. There are countless reports of people parking on others' driveways without permission, with the homeowner legally unable to do anything about it. I've had unwanted visitors myself.

When I visit my son in South Wales I have to park in the road near his front gate and phone him to come and collect me. He lives on a farm and the 'road' up to his house is beyond the capabilities of a standard car. When I first stopped there I knocked on the door of the house I wanted to park outside and asked if it was OK. The owner looked at my car and said "Leave it there as long as you like, it makes it look like I have posh visitors." :)

You must be a complete and utter Moron/@rsehole, to park on someone else's drive or park across someone else's drive. Hang on, what am I saying. Unfortunately they are everywhere. 🙄🤪🤬

Just got my first speeding ticket since 1983, 40 in a 30 in my own village, oh the shame, I was transporting my mother in law at the time so perhaps I was distracted. £100 for not paying attention.

It happens. 🙁 You've done very well, or been very lucky, not to get one since 1983. 🙂👍

No Speed Awareness Course? Normally offered up to 42 mph in a 30 zone.

PS most of the villages round here (including ours) are NSL, which is completely bonkers.

My friend go caught out like that......he thought it was NSL due to no signs.....but there were lamposts...so it was 30.

"You MUST NOT exceed the maximum speed limits for the road and for your vehicle (see the speed limits table). The presence of street lights generally means that there is a 30 mph (48 km/h) speed limit unless otherwise specified."

Indeed. There's often a 30 sign at the start of the zone, but even this isn't mandatory (AFAIK).

No lamp posts round here though :)

Thanks for the informative posts and tales of your indiscretions:D

To put this error into context, I have been checking insurance quotes for my next car to be bought in the next 2 months and the difference between having an SP30 and a clean licence in my case is £160pa. difference. Not so smart for 6mph over the top on a dual carriagway:wallbash:

Will be doubly careful from now on.

I think it's got I the point where even careful drivers are likely to get nicked somewhen. After getting away with it since 1989 I realise I might be on borrowed time! We should be concentrating on the road and driving appropriately based on what we can see... not getting our attention partially used up looking for speed limit signs and speed cameras.
.....and don't get me started on those "community speed watch" w4nk3rs. You speed like the rest of us and you might be retired miserable old gits, but surely you have better things to do with your time. Classic bit of nimby-ism....ok for me to speed...but you cant speed through MY village.... even if it is a wide part of the main A259 with hardly any houses! One of them at Bosham, who are there quite frequently, got punched in the face by a bloke driving a drop sided tipper....I dont condone violence....but my how a laughed when I found out. All that wasted time just to get a letter sent to the driver saying "slow down" from the local constabulary. We go one at work....no idea who was driving that day....straight in the bin.

And this shows speed/safety awareness cameras are doing their job.
We've got so concerned about getting 3points and a fine that we are looking for cameras and mobile cameras skulking to catch someone a few mph over the limit. The fun has truly disappeared from driving in this country. More cruise control for me.

Tech like the speed limit sign recognition in modern cars is pretty handy for keeping track of changing limits (it even picks up 'smart motorway' gantry signs ... easy to miss a change from 50 to 40 etc. when you've been driving in traffic for some time).

Yep, even Waze has this speed recognition reminder.
Hopefully my next car in waiting will have the newer technology too.

My mates one is near useless...picks up the limits on the back of HGVs fine.....not so good on partially overgrown or dirty road signs !!

Well it had to happen sometime and during my AMG ownership I came close a couple of times, but this ticket has really annoyed me.
I am one of the thousands of drivers who have been caught out by this damn cash camera. It's not a safety camera, the last serious accident was years ago when some unfortunate fool who was too lazy to walk a hundred yards to a pelican crossing thought he could cross a dual carriagway with central reservation and a 50mph limit and got himself killed.
The council correctly reduced the limit to 40mph where it stayed for years until the cycling zealots got themselves elected to the local council and decided to slow the traffic down everywhere. They reduced traffic on a dual carriagway to 30mph which also boasts 3 pelican crossings in the space of 400 yards!

The road I have just been "flashed" on is in a series of roads over around 1.5miles that sees the speed limit change from 50>30>40>30 and I hold my hands up, I lost concentration and let my speed drift to 36mph in a 30mph section. I'm not the only one it seems. I was following the car in front and I guess he got himself a fine as well.

After 15 years of having a clean licence, I'm not offered a speed awareness course, just £100 fine and 3 penalty points for 6mph over the limit. No excuse, its above the limit, but its a stupid limit decided upon by a council that despises motorists and makes no secret of it. Dorset Police must be coining it in on this one camera alone.
So I'll most likely be paying extra for my insurance at renewal for possibly the next 5 years it has to be declared.
Can you tell I'm annoyed!:wallbash:
That's ridiculous that you are not being offered the speed awareness course for that.
In Northern Ireland the authorities are somewhat more lenient.

For the speed awareness course, the speed of the offence must fall within the criteria stated below:

  • 30 mph up to and including 42 mph
  • 40 mph up to and including 53 mph
  • 50 mph up to and including 64 mph
  • 60 mph up to and including 75 mph
  • 70 mph up to and including 86 mph
The course costs £87.00 in NI but this may vary, depending on which provider you book with.

The course itself is pretty mind numbing in my opinion. I had the unfortunately pleasure of having to attend once when it had to be attended in person, it lasted 4 fecking hours.
7 years later or so the cash van got me by hiding under a bridge on a dual carriageway where I could not physically see him due to the concrete wall and he got me going away from the cash van. Infact he also got 2 of my neighbours and 2 colleagues I work with in the same spot at different times
The second course was online (thank you covid) but was much less mind numbing and was over in about 2.5 hours

Hope it’s something insanely fast.
