Car
I drive a mercedes S320, (wanted the S500, my wife said no)
Hello, iv just come back from the seaside and on the way back when trying to overtake my car shudderd when trying to pick up speed, its auto so when i pushed the kick down nothing happend,i can get hardly any pick up in any gear just shuddering,im extreamly concerned as it appears my cat has now gone also, is this related or something more serious? i have a S320 on a 99 plate. please advise.

I bloody hope so, i just brought the thing, its something i wanted for as long as iv known they exsisted, took along time for the wife to give the me the ok!

Broken up cats will block the exhaust flow very significantly...you'll lose all power. So it's the first place to start. If you can hear a rattle when you rev the engine and release accelerator whilst in Neutral, then it's likely to be the cats rattling.

I can see a blocked exhaust causing lack of power but it would normally just keep taking more and more power until the car is very slow, it won't normally cause stuttering.
Suspect the MAS.

Beware that if you fit a bespoke/custom catalyst your car will sound awfully 'metally' and loud, and the mercedes unit is very expensive, i think they're around £600-700.

Yup, mercedes quoated me £1900, £695 for the cats X2 the rest fitting, if anyone knows where to get reliable parts from could they tell me please, thanks. and thanks for help.

Look on e bay for a rough pricem search s320 cat = £180 to £280 either side.

The cat on my C220 cdi was blocked, caused by a leaking / duff injector, It would be ok if driven slowly but once you opened it up a little it used to jump into limp home mode. I ran it for a few more days before I drilled a hole in the cat in order to drive it without it going in limp mode.
Long story short - Got the cats taken out and replaced with a straight through pipe and yeah it did make the car sound tinny when you were at the rear (Next to the exhaust) and you could hear the turbo spool a lot louder. I was also told it was not good for the car as it reduced the back pressure, but the only thing I noticed was going down hill it used to hang onto the gears longer.

What about the MOT?

Is it a reqirement for a car to be fitted with a catalytic converter if is was original equipment. I have a 1994 Saab turbo which is currently running with a 3" front exhaust ipe(non-cat). Provided my car can meet the emisions levels required for the age of the vehicle am I correct in assuming that the presence of the 'cat' is not a necessity? - Mike Stevens
There is no necessity to have a catalytic converter on any vehicle. However, your vehicle will be MOT Tested as if it had one and it is unlikely that it will pass the emissions part of the MOT without the cat. The reason being that the engine and the catalytic converter were all part of the same integral design to meet the emission requirements when the vehicle was manufactured - MOTT.

I removed the cat from my last 3 discoveries with no problems at mot time.

Petrol engines probably different.

Depends on the age and state of tune, sometimes takes a little Tweak at MOT time ;)

All three were tuned to within an inch of their lives:D didnt just make smoke test either passed it pop!
