Noisy Tappet!

some engines do need it - my missus's astra GTE (circa 1980) needs to be thrashed to clean it - well, not thrashed, but driven a short way at a pace.

mybe not a merc admittedly.

Yes Paul.

I added around half a litre of ATF to the oil before its last change. Drove the car approx 5 miles before it arrived at the garage, so it got a good chance to get around.

Engine is much better now, thanks.

(Crikey, some wait before replying....I've got divorced in the meantime!!!)

Car now on 157K, running like a dream.

Cheers,
Greg

The hydraulic lifters on my C280 (v6 - 150 000 km) were also noisy - or at least one. So I bit the bullet and send it in to replace all the lifters.

The lifter noise came back after about two days. Does anyone know why this would happen??

New tappets acting on worn followers would be my guess.

Don't forget to drain from the sump drain plug, don't suck it out, like some garages do.

Like ALL MB dealers do Brian.

I know but not Good Engineering practice.

OK if engine is new, but when flushing you need to get all the gunk out.
