Not long until the winter tyres go on!

It seems like I've only just taken my winter tyres off.
It was 7 degrees one night this week in South Yorkshire.

I won't put my winters back on until there is a real chance of snow.
They really do spoil the handling of the old E-Class (210) saloon.
BUT ... Without them, the cars are pretty-hopeless in the snow.

Here's hoping for a mild Autumn and early winter.

Mid October to end of March depending on your latitude/altitude in the UK. And no -- despite their detractors if you fit them a bit early your car will not become dangerously unstable, take twice as long to stop, and the tyres won't shed chunks of rubber or wear/ melt off the rims. You might notice a bit more tyre "rumble", a bit more tyre tread "movement" under very heavy braking or cornering---- that's about it. As always its about knowing the limits of your car and tyres performance envelope and driving accordingly. :dk:

ps this applies to long established European manufacturers of winter tyres-- buy cheapo far east product at your peril just like summer tyres really

This clip was a couple of years ago - would you risk this overtaking manoeuvre with summer tyres on?

No bother with Winters.

Equally, getting up this driveway was no bother forwards or in reverse. Anyone that says they could do the same with summer tyres on must in fact be known as The Stig. Loking at it, it looks steeper than a 1 in 4... more like 45 degrees so a 1 in 2.

I echo that. If all this country had to contend with was cold roads I doubt winter tyres would get a look it. It's their ability to allow a car to drive through snow covered roads that makes them truly beneficial IMHO.

Typically my winter tyres are on for 4-8 weeks a year.
