slk230
My 6 speed manual on a 2003 slk230 is "notchy". Is there a "best" gear oil to use as changing the oilis my first thought. Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Is itt a problem 1st to second when cold?
It's a recognised problem - There is a synthetic that you can put in to resolve the problem - I'll take a look around and see if I can find it.

Edit: There you go. , - Redline MTL. You can get it in this country :)

Hi, did you change the gear oil with MTL. I'm about to do the same with my 2000 SLK230.
I understand that the gearbox oil level needs reducing from 1.5 to 1.2L to help with the 1st to 2nd change.
E-bay was the cheapest place for the MTL BTW

I have done this operation to my W203 (same 6-speed gearbox), 1,2 L Redline MTL.

Improvement comes gradually with the miles, but now a month later (daily driving) it is definitly better.

Be careful with the drain plug as overtightening it apparently can crack the gear box house

Hi Thanks for your reply Im confident to go with the MTL. I'm always hesitent with gear oil after terrible trouble when I changed the oil in my V-Class gearbox.

Thanks,
Mark

Remove the filler plug BEFORE you remove the drain plug! :)

Thanks for all your help. Changed the gearbox oil for 1.2l Redline MTL and it's totally transformed the box.
Mark
