older nokias & MAT (mercedes added tax)

Does anyone think that mercedes handsfree systems are keeping the prices of Nokia phones artificially high?!?!?

I cant find a 6230i for less than £90 on EBAY - its not even that good a phone!!

Actually, IMHO the 6230i is a very good phone. But it's only a phone and people want so much more these days.

You might well be right about MB keeping the demand high for what is an outdated model.

I beleive 6310i's are still available brand new through MB for a very reasonable £491.60 + vat

I've got three of them whch I'll gladly let you have at that price;)

I bought a brand new one off E-Bay for £80 recently, used ones are around £50.......and yes I think they are artifically high because of the MB hands free.

It's just plug and play. Sometimes there are issues with the firmware version on the phone.

To clarify is it a 6310i that you need or a 6230i they're quite different...

If it's a 6310i then I have some 6210's that could help you...

Slightly off topic, but have a handsree set up in my merc, minus the cable and cradle for an 8110 or 3110:crazy:

In my Audi have the handsfree with cable and cradle for a 6210.

Question is, would the cable and cradle from the 6210 set up work/fit the 8110 control box? I ask as it looks a bit of a mare to get the Audi dash to bits?:)

Cheers,

hijacking the topic (again) how do u find out which phone is compatible for your car? mine is a w203 c200k estate 02 plate? any help much appreciated.

The 6230i is still a very saleable asset because so many company cars were fitted with that kit. My mum has had a Saab and a Vectra, and I have had a BMW with the same kit. The phone is great for what it does but unfortunately doesn't do much and is rather large.

AFAIK the 6230i will also fit in most of the older Nokia handsfree kits. A colleague at my old workplace, fed up with the large black Nokias we had as standard (5110), replaced it with the 6230 which worked fine. Might be worth a go...

Think people are getting a bit confused here, although having said that Nokia model numbering is confusing itself...

The 6230i is a much newer phone (c. 2003/4+) and was a minor update to the 6230 (Both spiritual successors to the 6310i - supposedly!). The phone that most pre 2002 Mercs had was the Nokia 6310i or Nokia 6210 or Nokia 6150. The 6210 / 6310 were one of the most popular business phones as they had a very long production lifespan and as others have said many cars were fitted with them. I've been often offered cash for my 6310i (over 250 Euros at Stockholm Airport once!) as they are often fitted to Mercedes, BMW, Bentley and other premium cars.

There's lots of information on this forum about the in/compatability of various untis. To have the full integration with COMAND (where fitted) and the steering wheel controls and instrument cluster you need to have the full Mercedes kit, not other manufacturers stuff really works.

On the firmware issue Rich you can get the phone flashed (if requried) by Carphone Warehouse or other Nokia approved repairers. Early Nokia 6230s had software problems (phones rebooting themeselves etc.) It is also worth checking whether you definitley need a 6230i or whether a 6230 will do. Only noticeable differences are keypad (can be upgraded) and 1.3 megapixel camera.

Hope this helps...

Me and wife both carry old uncool Nokia phones because of our Merc car kits. I have a 6210 for my W210 and she has a 6310i in her B Class. People often ask me why I'm using such an old unfashionable phone :o

Also screen is much higher res on the 6230i - 208x208 vs 128x128 on the 6230.

P.S. there's nothing uncool about a 6210/6310. on the contrary... they are retro cool ;)

I still use my 6 year old 6210...

Me too, still use the 6210 & 6310. I even have the original phone that came with our W203, think its a Nokia 6150. It even has Mercedes-Benz & the Merc logo on the sticker where the IMEI number is... (not that anyone would ever see it though!) :o

Sorry, meant to say on ebay now.
