I have just found a C43 rear box on German eBay and its going for cheap.

The trouble is, the tips appear to have been snapped off and require welding on. judging by the picture is it as simple as that or should I be more wary?

I am already in discussions with the seller at the mo...

Offer a smoked AMG muffler for W202-C43.
The Tips have yet to be welded

I think that provided you could grab it for a good price and then get the tips re-welded by a professional welder it should be all fine. Would look amazing with your C43 AMG rear bumper too. So if the price is right why not reat yourself for christmas, im sure you wont be disapointed :D

If the tips have snapped off, isn't it effectively knackered. I could be wrong but the only reason they'd go is if the box was gone through tin worm. IMHO it might not be worth it in the end..... I'd be wary if I were you Karl. What has the seller said?

The actual box doesn't look quite the right shape to me.

In fact I think it is upside down in that pic, with the tips aligned wrong.

It should be stainless steel, so should not have tin worm;)

Well spotted, it is upside down.

I agree with Graham - it's definitely upside down in the photo.

Looking at the actual item, it seems very tired, could well be tin worm as NW suggests.

If it was just a case of welding the tips back on (ie, the box is 'sound' other than that), why has it been removed and why hasn't the seller done this.

I wouldn't pay a fortune for it really.

Yep definitely upside down.

Stainless exhausts can and do rust unfortunately, I've seen them last less than a regular mild steel system before.

Then there must be something wrong with the steel.
I fitted a full stainless system on my old Mk1 3000 GXL capri in 1986. My mate owns it now and uses it nearly every day and the exhaust is still solid, although a little heat tarnished:devil:
Has a lifetime guarantee too:D One of the many cars I wish I'd never sold:rolleyes:

I think Stainless comes in different grades - I've seen a few failed, a Rover V8 system from Rimmer Brothers fell apart after a few years - that got replaced under the lifetime warranty.

I'm sure they used to fail where the welds were mainly, perhaps the process of welding affects it in some way (I know welding stainless is a little more specialised)

Thanks for the replies, its up for a BIN price of £77.

How and why are the tips broken, his English is as good as my German.

He hasnt replied as to how much it will cost to ship to here yet :(

Mmm, not looking great IMO

I reckon you could get a full stainless system with the cost that bit is going to go for... A good exhaust fabricator should be able to make you something equally good resembling the same shape.
