A question...

I need to fit 2 pairs of skis into a rental car... price is roughly the same...

FIAT Panda or FIAT Punto?

M.

Punto is probably the better bet but I am not sure full size skis would fit in either. Is this in Italy? If so then you will probably get the hire fleet special Peugeot 206+ whatever you order.

I would say a panda is bigger.

Both will have ski hatches or split folding seats I would imagine, so assuming there's no more than 4 of you, you should be fine.

Bigger problem I think will be lack of snow.

Panda only folds in one piece. Split fold is extra - unlikely to be on a hire car.

I was expecting the panda to be bigger to be honest... it's the modern panda, not the classic...

Only 2 of us (potentially just 1) - basically need a car to get me, my skis and my gf from Naples to Rome (where my car is). Once I get to my car, it's all easy.

Snow... t'was snowing when I drove down, there were 1.5m of snow on passo tonale last week... 25cm in Bardonecchia (where I'm going); 45 in cervinia, and a few scatterings here and there. Planning to go in December, so there should be a little more snow.

Worst case scenario, we can goto La Grave or la Meje (not sure of spelling of either), which are on glaciers... snow guaranteed there ;) And both are on the way back home!

With only one or two of you you could take a Fiat 500 :)

Personally I think the new Panda is a better car than the Punto.

I presume these are sensible skis (i.e. not for jumping)? if so, they'll fit in the passenger side with seat reclined and GF sat behind you, if push comes to shove..

Cheers,

Gaz

Sensible skis... 174 and 167 (iirc), both in a single back, 190cm long or so (external dimension).

Didn't think of putting her behind - that's a brilliant idea!

Change of plans... flying to Rome, picking up SWMBO along with her 60kg of rocks (geologists... sigh) in a taxi and then heading to my car...

The taxi is an e-class... they have guaranteed the skis will fit - so let's see what happens!

Personally even hired, after the recent accident I'd have neither... (the poor woman who hit me had a punto, and it was almost destroyed in a 30mph shunt).

I had a Panda on hire this summer in spain, and it was a gutless, horrid car. Probably would take skis in both (down middle), but you are best avoiding imho. Myself and SWMBO concurred we'll pay more and get a minimum of focus or golf when hiring in future.
