There isn't an up and down switch as such-- the electric aerial is activated by a direct signal from the radio when its switched on via a wired connection ( colour code convention for this is normally blue AFAIK) What you can do is put a switch in this line to prevent the aerial going up if the tape/cd player is being used rather than the radio. Any standard 3/5amp ( rating isn't important since very little current is used) car accessory switch will do -Halfords sell them.

Wouldn't hurt to blast through the parts catalogue for something OEM looking though would it? A taxi or truck-type switch from the period would probably do

Absolutely- If its going to be in plain sight its a must as you say. I was influenced by the fact I hid mine inside the storage compartment between the seats.
