Hi guys just wanted to open this thread for thoughts... Who has used a oil extractor and what did they think? Also do we think we can remove more oil if we take the normal approach ie. Via sump plug? Pro's and con's please

I've used one for many years to great effect. MB and BMW workshops suck out the oil and I'm sure BMW have used this method for around 25 years.

The oil has to be reasonably hot to become thin enough to be extracted efficiently.
Have all the gear set up, take the car for a run to get up to temperature and then pump around 10 after returning.
When empty, wait another 15-20 minutes and return for any oil that has run down into the sump.
If you then add a cupful of new oil and then leave for a further 15 minutes, you should be able pump again. You can also pump out of the oil filter chamber.

It's a good idea to buy a pump with enough capacity to hold all of the oil so as not to be piddling around emptying mid way through.

As above. I think all MB model designed for it. I have used it all the time I have owned MB.... only negative thing is that I have only 6 liter capacity of extractor, need to empty in mid change... would be very clean way to oil change, only now some mess is coming when need to put things back after emptying reservoir...

The capacity thing put me off the pumps with a container built-in, so I just went for an electric pump (Ebay, about £22) that was german-made and works brilliantly. Just pump the dirty oil into a couple of old oil cans and "dispose of them responsibly".

I'm convinced that, provided you don't hurry, it will extraxct about the same amount as the traditional method, without all that nausia with the undertray.

I reccon about 1/2 to 3/4 hour from start to finish, but as mentioned, do it hot (not too hot!) and don't rush it, or you'll leave too much old oil behind.

Can't use the pump for my next oil change though, I'm fitting a magnetic sump plug, so the undertrays will have to come off anyway..

Have the Pela 6 ltr model , have used it for the wife's VW Golf, also on my previous BMW , found it to be be excellent . Have not used it yet on the Merc . :thumb:

I also have the 6l plea and have been using it for the last 5 years on all my cars! It's very much worth it when the oil filter is accessible from the top as its super easy and you can suck out the oil from the oil filter housing. Now I have the Mercedes and its 8l I did have to empty it half way through. Would recommend!

I bought one of these after reading a previous post on here, operation was just so simple and easy. The bonus is of course that you don't need to fumble under the car removing the belly pans

I've one and have used it but I don't think it's as effective as draining the oil out from the sump. Of course that's it the car in question has a sump plug.

Thanks for all ur comments guys it's a great insight, now anyone know where to get one cheap? Average 75 quid for a 6.5l pela/ sealey pump

Machine mart. They do vat free promotions from time to time and if you register with them you'll probably get a discount code etc... I really must get one . There's a bit of difference in price between 6&14 ltr. Let us know how you get on.

I felt the need to have one when drain plugs became hidden behind the under tray. I have to admit it makes changing the oil a much cleaner and easier job. After carefully measuring what came out and what was needed to refill the first time I used it, I'm confident it gets all the oil out.

I think removing the undertrays has its advantages too. Gives you a chance to check over everything that is normally hidden, spotting even the smallest leaks etc that may not be spotted by doing everything from above.
Any cables that may have worked loose, pipes that are starting to crack etc
I like to see the trays spotless (well, dry and dusty), with no evidence of anything to worry about.

My 6L was 39 quid off an ebay Chandler.
Now even slightly less!

I have used my 6ltr Pela pump for the last 5yrs and apart from replacing the "0" rings this year its been excellent.

One other thing to mention is that ive read a few horror stories regarding the later Mercedes plastic sumps cracking when the sump plug is removed!! well if a Pela is used then this problem wont rear its ugly head.

Also its a very handy tool to have lying about you can suck brake fluid out and also dirty window washer fluid etc it is also very handy to bleed brakes and clutch slave cylinders by drawing the fluid through the system.

I've had my 14L one for a while now ( I bought it because of my 500's 8L sump capacity : needed to be able to drain all the old oil before refilling , then using the empty cans from the new oil to dispose of the old oil ) .

It takes seconds to set up , no mess with spilt oil on the drive , no faffing around under the car with sump plugs , and easy disposal of the old oil .

I still wear nitrile gloves for handling the extraction tubes , and the oil filter element . It is still worth having a few cloths handy to catch the odd drips that inevitably appear .

Any amount not recovered will be negligible .

I was thinking of getting a second set of tubes so it could be used to drain ATF - has anybody tried that ?
