Why would you need a second set of tubes?

I've got a cheapy Silverline one. Bought originally just to remove excess overfilled oil so it is only a 1.5L capacity. With such a small capacity is is easy to over-pressurise and suck more than the capacity of the tank itself but if you are paying attention it's easy enough to release the pressure. I have several 25L drums to empty into which I acquired free of charge although I have also kept a couple of empty 5L oil containers.

It's hard to clean the tubes out properly. I tried squirting washing up liquid down the end then running water through but that method doesn't result in all the inner surface being touched.

I clean mine by sucking through boiling hot soapy water

Sorry, i don't understand why you want to clean the inside for?

Stops residual oil dripping onto your shed or garage floor and if you use the same extraction tube for other fluids then it will stop (the tiny) contamination if the residual oil drips into the other vessel.

I was thinking of getting a second set of tubes so it could be used to drain ATF - has anybody tried that ?

Someone mentioned they can be useful to help empty non-drainable TCs via the outlet to the cooler.

As the pan has to come off, there's not much benefit in sucking over draining.

Other than the reduced risk of spillage : if most of the fluid has been removed then much less risk of a mess on the driveway when the pan does come off .

Probably not relevant to many here but I tried to drain my bike using my one and it only drained about a 1/3. So my advice is unless it has a dipstick(lawnmowers, motorbikes, etc) you might not be able to drain all the oil.

I haven't tried the extractor on my old BMW flat twin yet but it does have a long dipstick so it should work. If not the drain plug is very accessible. Every thing being simple and easy to get at is one of the things I love about working on the bike.

Did my E300TD yesterday and got out c.8ltrs, it worked very well. I didnt use to get any more out by undoing the sump plug. As I was on a role, I changed the oil in my dads car too. Then all disposed off at the recycling centre. Easy to use and would recommend.

Bought a pela 6000 of eBay for 35 quid so I look forward to trying it out come March (service time) I'll let u know how I get on thanks for all the replies

Its good to see everyones feedback. I did another 2 cars last weekend. Looking forward to hearing your experience.

Hi guys so finally unwrapped my new pela pump and have to say either I was doing it wrong or somethings broke! Took an age to extract the oil, I was sure whether to keep oil cap on or off ( would it effect pressure?) or maybe the pipe is too small? and another thing is I believe the oil was too cold also so perhaps all these factors hampered my experience? Anyways I managed to extract 8 ltrs and perform my service but it took around 2.5 hrs any tips for next time?

Yes, your oil was too cold if it took that long. I normally try and time my oil change so it's done after I've driven home from somewhere so the engine/oil is hot. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

Always a good idea to warm the oil a bit before draining. Usually the Pela comes with a variety of tube bore sizes but you are of course constrained by the internal diameter of the dipstick tube. It also helps to give the vacuum a top up now and again during the draining proceedure.

Yeah must have been the oil was too cold but in saying this it states on pump box not to extract hot oil so it must be a fine line unless they just state that to cover themselves in case someone burns themselves? Thanks for ur advice guys

Thats just covering themselves. Take it for a spin just the same as if you were draining from sump plug. Also remove the oil filler cap. I'm sure you will notice a difference. Did you feel the tube able to hit the bottom of the sump or was something blocking its path? Lastly I found a bit of tape at the top of the dipstick tube and around the plastic pipe helps extraction by maintaining vacuum.

I suck it out (excuse the expression) with the oil at running temp. It is a valid point that Pela make about hot oil. It is not funny if you manage to drop it down your trousers.

I now use a battery operated pump. Same procedure. Just less work (no pumping) and costs about £15.
